Position Summary

Design and develop enhancements and improvements of products used in personal floatation devices in alignment with Nordson strategic goals and product roadmap. Manage projects as per established phase gate processes in support of Nordson goals including coordination of the cross-functional team member activities to meet specified customer and corporate design, manufacturing, and quality requirements. Manage the activities and timelines of new product projects within the guidelines of company policies and product development procedures.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design updates and enhancements to the existing personal floatation device product offerings from Nordson. These enhancements include but are not limited to new feature designs, design updates to mitigate quality concerns, and design updates to improve manufacturability of the inflator product lines.
  • Innovative design into new inflation based products aligned with the strategic goals of Nordson.
  • Customer management/interaction: ensuring project schedules, technical details, technical risks, etc. are effectively communicated and managed throughout all phases of the development cycle.
  • Independent evaluation, selection and application of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using sound judgment and ingenuity in making minor adaptations and modifications.
  • Receive instructions on specific assignment objectives, points of emphasis, reference and information sources and possible solutions. Solves complex problems jointly with Product Manager and has the work reviewed for application of sound engineering judgment.
  • Design and develop innovative products from concept to production that provides sustained competitive advantage to Nordson.
  • Coordinate appropriate communications with Nordson customers to facilitate transfer of customer requirements and project acceptance.
  • Refine technical data received from marketing & sales, customers, and manufacturing team members, conducts appropriate evaluation, and creates detailed project scope, schedule, product specifications and risk analysis as per Nordson, Product Development processes. Provides accurate and timely project status updates to appropriate Nordson personnel.
  • Direct efforts of Nordson, cross-functional team which is responsible for all aspects of launching new projects from concept to volume production. Coordinates regular status meetings with Nordson personnel as needed or requested.
  • Actively manages projects, works with the cross-functional team members and with effective communication smoothly accomplishes all project activities. Maintain project schedules current.
  • Develop detailed engineering drawings, fixtures and gages for new products using accepted Nordson, tools.
  • Utilize input from all departments from within Nordson in the creation and implementation of Design FMEA, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA). Assist the manufacturing engineer in the creation of Process FMEA.
  • Develop test protocols for internal or external use and perform design evaluation and validation tests resulting in products that meet customer, design and manufacturing requirements.
  • Creates and updates documents, Purchase Orders, Shop Orders, Control Plans and Engineering Parts in the Enterprise Resource Planning System Manage outside contract resources to ensure on-time delivery of quality products and/or services.
  • Responsible for meeting scope, schedule and cost requirements of projects assigned.
  • Provides accurate and timely project status updates to appropriate company team members.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to effectively present information to customers and top management. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Must be able to read and interpret mechanical drawings and understand the application of geometric tolerances. Must be able to use inspection devices (microscopes, calipers, gage pins, optical comparator).
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Operates Rapid Prototyping, testing, and machine shop equipment as needed to support Engineering, New Product Development and Quality Assurance activities.
  • One to two years of experience in use of one or more of these software tools (Solid Works, PDMWorks, Solid Edge, Pro-E) is required.
  • Proficient in use of typical desktop hardware and software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).Basic use of MS Project.
  • Experience in use of one or more of these software tools (Solid Works, PDMWorks, Solid Edge, MS Project, Project Scheduler, and FEA Software such as COSMOS, Pro-E, and AutoCAD etc.) is required.
  • Proficient in use of typical desktop hardware and software (Dell/Compaq, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Proficient in use and navigation of a Windows operating system in a networked environment.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or a University in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline is required.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in general engineering field.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in designing and manufacturing plastic injection molded products is required.
  • Familiarity with UL 1191 and ISO 12402-7 standards desired

Travel Required: Minimal (~10%)
