The Department of Student Engagement and Leadership is a central hub of activity within the University and Division of Student Affairs. It serves to equip students with critical tools related to leadership development. The department encompasses several opportunities for student engagement including Student Leadership Development, Registered Student Organizations, Campus Activities Board, Student Government Association, the Royal Court, and Fraternity & Sorority Life, New Student Orientation, and the Walter N. & Henrietta B. Ridley Student Center Operations as well as university-wide events such as Homecoming, Viking Fest, Winter Homecoming and Week of Welcome.
Description of Work
The Director for Leadership Development is charged with the management and operations of the university's Leadership Development Program and events, programs, and other initiatives that support the development of students. The Leadership Development Program will be a multi-tier approach to leadership development for emerging (new), developing (mid-level), and executive (advanced) with various tracks and topics including a specific track that focuses on civic engagement and national service; thus, showcasing the journey of a student. The Director will provide oversight for civic engagement programs and initiatives with the support of the Director for the Student Experience and Coordinator for Student Life. Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Director is responsible for administering and supporting an assessment driven, comprehensive, retention-focused student engagement plan for the student body by offering leadership development workshops, sessions, programs, and events. This position will draft policies and procedures relevant to their work, mentor/counsel students on issues to academic, social, and personal success while providing them with campus and external resources.

The Director will serve as the primary advisor for the Student Government Association, Mister and Miss Elizabeth City State University Royal Court, the Council of Presidents ( COP), coordinates COP training programs, assists COP with their financial account management, and guides the planning and calendaring of COP programming. The Director will serve as the initial point of contact for clubs & organizations.

The Director will support the Office of Student Engagement and Leadership in the planning of high impact events to include, but not limited to: Homecoming, Viking Fest, Week of Welcome, Viking Voyage Orientation, Viking Showcases, Blueprint Recruitment Initiatives, Founders Day Weekend, and Parent and Family Weekend. Additionally, the role involves co-managing SEAL's work-study student program with the Director for Leadership Development and Coordinator for Student Life, assisting with the Ad Astra Venue Reservations system.

The Director will assist with recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising student staff, as well as coordinating campus-wide activity programs that support the learning outcomes. Through the refining of our approach to student organizations, university outreach, and the continuous development of events focused on contributing to student life on campus, the Director will create a stronger environment to cultivate change and strengthen University goals related to student organizations and events.
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position
Possesses the ability to design, implement, and assess a multi-tiered leadership development curriculum tailored to emerging, developing, and executive student leaders, including civic engagement and national service tracks.

Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills and a student-centered approach to advising and mentoring individuals and groups (e.g., SGA, Royal Court, Council of Presidents), promoting student success through academic, social, and personal development.

Exhibits effective planning and organizational skills to execute large-scale university events and leadership initiatives (e.g., Homecoming, Viking Fest, Viking Voyage Orientation), ensuring strategic alignment with institutional goals.

Demonstrates the ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships across departments and with student leaders, staff, and external stakeholders to foster inclusive and impactful leadership experiences.

Applies knowledge of assessment tools and strategies to measure program effectiveness, track student leadership development outcomes, and support continuous improvement of initiatives and services.

Possesses knowledge of drafting and implementing policies and procedures related to student engagement, leadership programming, and organization management, ensuring compliance with institutional standards.

Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to facilitate workshops, trainings, and educational sessions that foster leadership, civic responsibility, and student engagement.

Exhibits competency in managing student organization accounts, co-managing departmental budgets, supervising work-study student staff, and utilizing campus tools (e.g., Ad Astra Venue Reservation system) effectively and responsibly.
Minimum Training and Experience
Minimum training requires a Bachelor's degree (Master's in Student Affairs/Higher Education preferred) with at least two years of experience in positions of which responsibilities include student activities and Fraternity & Sorority Life, or other Student Affairs-higher education oriented areas; or a combination of education and experience in Higher Education.
