Job Summary

Join our Oak Creek, WI team as a CNC Model Maker Intern! Our internships are hands-on, highly technical, and designed to let you see what working at Astronautics is like. This is a paid undergraduate intern opportunity. Our summer intern program consists of at least 10 weeks of real-world experience. Our interns, working under the guidance of our experienced Model Maker's, will gain hands-on experience in creating, designing, and constructing components and assemblies with various materials. You will plan jobs, design and build prototypes, and utilize essential machining operations tools, parts, and fixtures. You will use blueprints, drawings, and/or CAD designs to create prototypes according to established engineering specifications. You may perform minor repairs on prototyping machinery.

This summer internship is for anyone enrolled in or pursuing a certificate or Associate degree in a relevant CNC or Tool & Die program from an accredited institution and is interested in starting a career as a Model Maker. This is a first shift, part-time position (minimum 24 hours, Mon-Fri). Work hours are generally 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

This on-site position is located at our headquarters in Oak Creek, WI. You will report directly to the Manager of Engineering and Model Shop.

How You Will Do It:

  • Interpret complex engineering drawings for design intent and critical tolerance.
  • Plan bench procedures and lay out work from blueprints, drawings, models, hand sketches, or work from verbal or written instructions and other specifications to construct components and assemblies in various materials.
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC 2-axis and 3-axis milling, turning, drilling, saws, surface grinding machines, shear, and manual brake work.
  • Demonstrate competence in using precision measuring devices, including but not limited to micrometers, dial calipers, height gauges, gage blocks, and plug gages.
  • Perform close and exacting bench and assembly operations to fit, align, calibrate, adjust, and finish work. Precision fit and assemble parts to produce end items of specified finish and tolerances.

What We Look For

Required

  • Current enrollment pursuing a certificate or Associate degree in a relevant CNC or Tool & Die program from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75.
  • Able to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Support multiple company departments with prototype parts, assemblies, low-volume production runs, fixtures, and tooling needs.
  • Accomplish results by contributing to team efforts.
  • Communicate regularly with the department manager on work status and keep accurate time for each job assigned.
  • Able to work on-site part time during summer of 2025.
  • Eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Desired

  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above.
  • The ability to program conversational language 2-axix and 3-axis CNC milling machines. Southwestern TRAK and LPM.
  • TIG, MIG, and Stick welding experience.
  • Ability to work part-time during the school year.
