POSITION TITLE: Swim Coach

DEPARTMENT: Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center (Kroc Center Hawaii)

SUPERVISOR: Aquatic Manager

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt, Hourly

CLASSIFICATION: Part Time, Hourly

POSITION SUMMARY:

Swim Coach is a team leader who motivates, teaches, and inspires adult swimmers (fitness, triathlete, competitive, and non-competitive) who are dedicated to improving their fitness through swimming; enforce Kroc Center Hawaii guidelines, pool and safety rules and Kroc Center Hawaii policies to maintain a safe environment and member and guest satisfaction.

Swim Coach will have a deep commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army, which will be evident in his or her professional life and the manner in which he or she represents The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in the community.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:



  • High School graduate or GED is required.
  • At least 1 year of coaching or managing a swim club or varsity team.


PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:



  • Swim lesson instruction and water exercise instruction.
  • Familiar with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim levels and other Red Cross water safety courses and know how to use course materials effectively.
  • Swim Club administration experience
  • American Red Cross or Ellis & Associates Lifeguard Training Certification, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescue
  • USA Master or USA Coach Certification.


Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be accepted.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:



  • Create and implement short- and long-term program that can meet the diverse needs of participants, namely competitive swimming (both pool and open water swimming), non-competitive physical fitness swimming, improvement of stroke technique, triathlon training, etc.
  • Know and understand the Kroc Center Hawaii Aquatics program, including classes, swimming levels, skills taught in each level, and the requirements for passing each level.
  • Evaluate students and recommend appropriate group for their skill levels.
  • Provide corrective and positive feedback to students to ensure learning and a positive atmosphere.
  • Cover all materials required in a training session. Complete student evaluations, reports and records. Maintain confidentiality of all information and documents received.
  • Have all instructional equipment ready before sessions begin and put all equipment away at the end of lessons.
  • Communicate regularly with participants and parents.
  • Organize team activities like fun meets, year-end celebrations and other team building activities.
  • Recognize distressed swimmers and provide the necessary assistance.
  • Know, understand, and enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
  • Never leave students unattended.
  • Maintain a positive rapport and image with students, members and guests.
  • Keep the facilities clean, including pool, pool area, and locker rooms.


  • Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center Hawaii.


  • Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings.
  • Maintain regular and punctual work attendance. Available to work a flexible schedule that includes working on weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


The position requires the ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner in conformity with The Salvation Army Mission Statement. The position also requires the ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The candidate chosen for this position will have the ability to remain in the water ranging from 80-90 degrees for the duration of swim lessons (1-4 hours); support child weight in the water; recognize distressed swimmers and those needing assistance and provide the necessary aid and able to communicate verbally and loudly across distances.

May also be required to run, swim, paddle and walk long distances; stand and sit for long periods; uses hand to finger, handle, feel or operate lifesaving equipment.

The position requires sitting; climbing and/or balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, stretching, crouching and/or crawling; standing; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; use of vision; pushing/pulling/lifting/carrying 50-75 pounds and occasionally more than 75 pounds. This employee may also be required to work weekends, holidays, and evenings.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The employee regularly works under outdoor weather conditions, is routinely exposed to the sun, may be exposed to extreme heat; works on uneven and/or slippery surfaces and is periodically exposed to hazardous conditions/situations.

Attendance at trainings and conferences, both in Hawaii and on the mainland, may be required. Extensive travel is possible, including air travel, driving long distances, night driving, overnight travel, and extended travel of three days or more.

EQUIPMENT NEEDS:

Kick boards, swim buoys, hand paddles, swim noodles and associated swimming toy, and moving swimming teaching platform.

CERTIFICATES & LICENSES

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate

USA Master or USA Coach Certification

American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer

The candidate chosen for this position must have a valid driver's license and insured transportation.

On an annual basis, employees are required to participate in The Salvation Army's Fleet Safety Program.
