Position description

Assistant or Associate Professional Researcher - Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS)

The Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies (IHPS) at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is seeking applications for an Assistant or Associate Professional Researcher with a strong background in cutting-edge research in health policy. We are seeking a promising early-career investigator whose work advances understanding of how social and economic policies shape health outcomes and inequities, particularly among historically underserved populations.

The researcher's portfolio will focus on women's and children's physical and mental health, health behaviors, and risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. A deep understanding of the social determinants of health and the mechanisms through which they influence health and contribute to health inequities is essential. The successful candidate is expected to lead independent research using advanced econometric and quasi-experimental methods to evaluate the causal impacts of policies and programs.

The Professional Researcher's key responsibilities include developing and leading innovative research projects that align with the mission of IHPS; applying rigorous quantitative methods to analyze large-scale survey and administrative datasets; publishing research findings in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals; and disseminating findings to inform policymakers and support evidence-based decision-making. The successful applicant will also be expected to mentor junior team members and contribute to the broader intellectual and collaborative community at IHPS and UCSF.

This is a full-time academic appointment in the Professional Researcher series. Appointees in this series conduct independent research equivalent in quality to that required for the Professor series and may serve as Principal Investigators.

Required Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in economics, public policy, epidemiology, public health, sociology, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in evaluating safety net policies and programs related to health.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in advanced econometrics and quasi-experimental designs (e.g., difference-in-differences, synthetic controls, instrumental variables, regression discontinuity).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in analyzing large secondary survey and administrative data sets (e.g., National Health Interview Survey, Panel Study of Income Dynamics, and national birth certificate data).
  • A strong history of publication in disciplines related to health policy, social determinants of health, and health equity.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with professionals from multiple disciplines.
  • Skills to communicate complex information in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated ability to develop strong, well-designed applications for extramural funding, and should have a strong interest in building a health services or policy research portfolio in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of social scientists, policy experts, and clinicians.
  • Applicant must have all requirements met by the time of hire.
  • Applicant's materials must list (pending) qualifications upon submission.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A research portfolio focused on women's and children's health, health behaviors, or risk factors for chronic diseases.
  • Experience developing and submitting extramural grant applications (e.g., NIH, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation).
  • A track record of securing research funding as Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator.
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in disseminating research to policymakers to contributing to evidence-based decision making.
  • Experience in supervising senior staff, pre- and post-doctoral fellows in their research.
