Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. Bell Labs research has resulted in ten Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other prominent recognitions.

We have openings in a department within Bell Labs that performs groundbreaking research for systems, systems science, and cybersecurity to advance the state of the art in dependable and secure communications systems and technologies.

One area of focus is developing and applying quantum theory and technologies for secure communications, computation, and their convergence. This includes a range of interrelated topics such as quantum networking and distributed quantum computation. Our work involves developing state-of-the-art utilization of emerging quantum technologies to impact the next generation of networking and the network-compute continuum.

This position is for a highly motivated individual versant in quantum information science and related fields who can perform research at the forefront of quantum communications. The candidate will bridge theoretical concepts with practical implementations, advancing research in quantum networking, distributed quantum computation, and their applications.

Our team is based in Murray Hill, New Jersey (USA).

As a research scientist on our team, you will be involved in:

  • Conducting research aimed at developing classical and quantum algorithms and protocols for control and security of quantum, classical, and hybrid communication systems, and security of integrated classical-quantum systems.
  • Developing approaches for efficient utilization and management of entanglement over distances as a resource,
  • Exploring new research challenges in fault-tolerant distributed quantum computing and distributed quantum computation applications and algorithms.
  • Staying current with the latest research trends, challenge the status quo, and push boundaries of the state-of-the-art
  • Building proof-of-concept systems, create (re-)usable software assets, and evangelize your work to the research community
  • Publishing research at leading academic and industrial forums, create new intellectual property, and present results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborating with Nokia Bell Labs researchers across the globe and external academic and industrial partners
  • Working with Nokia business units to incubate research into early-stage products or spinouts, transfer knowledge, and represent expertise in your field of expertise

We are looking for a motivated research scientist with the following qualifications:

  • A PhD in Quantum Information Science, Quantum Computing, Physics, or a closely related field
  • Strong knowledge of quantum theory, quantum cryptography, and quantum error correction, and a strong foundation in the mathematics of quantum communications systems.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present research to both academic and industry audiences
  • A self-driven attitude, unwavering commitment to team goals, and enthusiasm for tackling new challenges
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and take initiative

The following would be a plus:

  • Knowledge and experience with scientific programming
  • Experience with quantum platforms and tools (e.g., Qiskit)
  • Previous Nokia intern or co-op experience
