Job Purpose
The Director of Estimating is responsible for leading the estimating function within the NE electric business, ensuring accurate and comprehensive cost estimates for projects. This role involves collaboration with various departments to support strategic decision-making and project execution. The position is located in Northboro, MA.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide leadership and oversight to a team of 4 managers and 30+ estimators who are accountable for the development of early stage and detailed, sanction level project estimates following the Network Development Process. These estimates will be completed with input from Asset Management, engineering scope documents and designs, site visits, commercial commitments, risk analysis and quantification, lessons learned, and other inputs as appropriate.
- Lead, motivate and develop a professional team, prioritize work and allocate resources in order to ensure results are delivered in line with expectations and alignment of strategic objectives.
- Play active role in cost estimating assurance on project team during target cost negotiations with contracting partners.
- Ownership and maintenance of the end to end estimating process, estimating data, and estimating tools. Continuously assess estimating tools, methodology, and processes to ensure they meet the requirements for the estimating team to be successful. Work with IT organization to address gaps and requirements.
- Actively manage all regulatory requirements related to project cost estimating, measurement, estimate to actual variance analysis and reporting results to our NE Regulators as required.
- Establish and articulate key performance indicators and financial budgets in order to optimize business performance in line with set objectives. Drive year on year accuracy on estimated cost through the development of a detailed cost library.
- Analyze key themes and cost elements from a wide range of data sources in order to identify how different scenarios may impact upon the business and facilitate improvements in construction methods and subsequent contract evaluations.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the Estimating organization through the development and reporting of KPIs, feedback from stakeholders and team members, and data and trends. Understand unit costs and the factors that affect construction costs and be able to provide strategic direction and guidance team of estimators.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Building Construction, Construction Management, or Industrial engineering or; similar or; 10+ years experience.
- 5+ years engineering, project management, estimating, and/or construction experience in the utility industry or estimating field.
- 5 years experience of leading, inspiring and motivating a team of specialists/professionals and demonstrates taking specific actions to continuously improve.
- Strong understanding of electric industry construction standards and procedures.
- Professional certification in cost estimating is preferred.
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of regulatory issues affecting the industry.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills for internal and external consumption.
- Valid driver's license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy
