As a Principal R&D Engineer, supporting (Life Sciences) work includes: Applying mechanical and electrical engineering principles to develop medical devices that meet customer technical/functional specifications as well as manufacturing cost/efficiency requirements. This role is on site in our Belmont, CA location and a typical day would include:

  • Lead the design and development of components, fixtures, and metrology systems to advance the development of innovative intraocular lens (IOL) and technologies.
  • Develop and implement automated manufacturing processes to streamline the production of Intraocular lenses.
  • Conduct experiments and root cause analysis to address emerging manufacturing or design defects.
  • Collaborate closely with subject matter experts from a cross-functional team of mechanical, optics, manufacturing, and materials scientists to develop new methodologies, materials, or equipment as necessary to meet project milestones for intraocular lens development.
  • Prepare and deliver test protocols, technical reports, presentations, and other relevant documentation for internal and external submissions.
  • Participate in cross-functional R&D activities, serving as a functional representative in various core-team and sub-team project meetings.
  • Establish relationships with suppliers and contract manufacturers, building the capability to support manufacturing scale-up.

What You'll Bring to Alcon:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Equivalent years of directly related experience (or high school +13 yrs; Assoc.+9 yrs; M.S.+2 yrs; PhD+0 yrs)
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand and communicate in English
  • 5 Years of Relevant Experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree with five years of experience or bachelor's degree with seven years of experience (Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering)
  • Extensive experience in product development, preferably within the medical device industry.
  • The ability to fluently read, write, understand, and communicate in English
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
