Position Summary

The Strategic Planning & Operational Excellence executive is responsible for working with the Executive Leadership to develop and execute a strategic vision and plan to deliver CPS Energy's mission. This role is responsible for developing and executing strategic plans while simultaneously working to maximize efficiency, quality, and overall business performance, by identifying areas for improvement, implementing continuous improvement methodologies, and aligning business processes/operations with the company's strategic goals across business units.

The executive leads a team of professionals who work across the enterprise to develop, communicate, report and assist change management for long term vision/mission including a rolling 5-year strategic plan with milestones. Works with business planning to align annual business plans (including budget, performance measures and metrics) to the long-range plans/outcomes. Responsibilities include planning, performance improvement, proactive identification of risks and working with leaders across the organization. This position may also lead significant cross-enterprise programs and projects.

The executive is responsible for thought leadership, planning, and facilitating Board and leadership strategic working sessions. Develop five plus-year organizational strategic vision & annual business plans including integrated initiatives, measures, risks and assessment of performance levels. Work with Board of Trustees to incorporate feedback on strategic plan, performance measures, & mitigations while providing periodic updates to Board on progress.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Facilitate a process to surface key interdependencies on other divisions including Executive Leadership Team who will ensure that initiatives align with the divisional strategic plan and corporate strategy and goals
  • Create Executive & Board materials as required; keep abreast of changes in the industry to inform strategy; assist in the design of long-range strategic planning activities, such as: scenario planning, contingency planning, visioning sessions, coordinating strategic work sessions, & focused 'deep dive' analysis of various strategic topics; lead & participate in special projects as agreed to with division leadership.
  • Annually assists with the develop/update performance measures with targets, including individual performance goals, which demonstrate progress & performance to achieving enterprise mission/vision.
  • Partner with Financial Planning & Analysis, the Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO) & other key stakeholders to design and facilitate an annual planning process that is cohesive, coherent, and well communicated to the business across component parts, e.g., budgeting, strategic investment processes, enterprise risk assessment and annual planning.
  • Engage, throughout the year, in forums that guide and / or are informed by the corporate strategy.
  • Leads operational excellence (OE) for the organization.
  • Utilizing lean methodologies and other continuous improvement tools to optimize workflows and eliminate waste.
  • Standardizing processes and procedures across the organization.
  • Partners with business areas on identification, prioritization, and execution of OE improvement efforts
  • Measures and monitors impact of OE efforts across the organization
  • Provides project and OE coaching and consulting support to the organization.
  • Responsible for selecting and training OE improvement methodologies.
  • Support business and organizational development partnerships in support of organization's mission.
  • Coordinate with Government Relations and Legal Office to get local, state and federal support for strategic plans, as appropriate.
  • Lead a process to cascade the five-year strategy, associated goals and metrics, annually to individual divisions such that they build appropriate division-level annual strategic plans, as well as budget and strategic investment requests, to drive attainment of corporate goals.
  • Review plans for alignment to the corporate goal, clarity of articulation, feasibility and other factors, and provide feedback to the divisional leads.
  • Provides analysis and input on the best approach for sourcing an innovation via make, buy, or partner.
  • Develop strategic business plans and roadmaps for inorganic growth by linking corporate strategy objectives, growth plans and strategic investment plans to support change in business model.
  • Collaborate with business unit executives to develop and execute strategic business plans & roadmaps.
  • Coordinate new rate requests, revenue streams and business partnerships to support changes to business model & support strong financial metrics.

Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Extensive experience in a leadership position in strategy, operational excellence, engineering, finance, or other complex areas of operations.
To qualify, applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
Proven success interacting with executive level management to determine solutions, resolve issues, and present recommendations at a senior level.
Experience managing multiple complex initiatives.
Ability to motivate and inspire large and diverse teams, manage multiple projects on a real-time basis, and identify and resolve operational and integration challenges.
Ability to lead and build cross-functional teams to identify and implement process improvement initiatives, while developing team members through ongoing execution of:
Recruiting, training, retention coaching and support, performance/employee engagement management, and related managerial activities.
Ability to monitor operational performance metrics and identifying areas for improvement.
Display a high level of initiative, demonstrate a willingness to experiment, invite and explore potential new ideas while understanding the risks to the organization.
Possess a mission orientation and ability to focus on doing what's right for the business.
Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.

  • Demonstrated project management and consulting skills; Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize multiple projects and assignments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to deliver presentations to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Ability to deal effectively with ambiguous situations and be flexible, as appropriate, as well as create structure to reduce ambiguity.

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Finance, business, or related discipline
Required Certifications
Working Environment

Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events.
Physical Demands
