Summary of Job Duties:The ECMO program coordinator is a registered nurse who, in close coordination with the ECMO medical director and ECMO/MCS team, is responsible for the development, implementation, and operationalization of the ECMO Program and other MCS programs. The ECMO Program Coordinator will monitor, evaluate, and initiate performance improvement processes to support the success of the program. They will monitor, collect, and report metrics to the ECLS team and the ELSO ECMO registry. They will be responsible for maintaining and upholding compliance in training requirements for all ECLS staff, through the development and coordination of required initial and ongoing training and evaluation of clinical competence of ECLS specialists. The ECMO/MCS coordinator will be responsible for program development of the ECMO program and will assist with other MCS programs. While holding a working knowledge of ECMO, the candidate will cover call rotation with the other ECMO coordinators, providing a 24/7 call responsibility. This position provides clinical leadership and expertise in the implementation and management of the program, utilizing evidence-based standards and careful stewardship of resources to promote conservation and appropriate use of ECLS intervention and resources at UAMS. Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate in Nursing,

  • Valid Arkansas Registered Nurse License,

  • 3 years of experience as an ECMO Specialist

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BSN degree in nursing

  • Previous experience as an ECLS/ECMO specialist or ECLS/ECMO coordinator

  • National Certification

Responsibilities:

  • Functions as an expert clinician for the ECLS patients

  • Monitors, evaluates, and improves clinical practice, quality, and safety related to ECLS

  • Consults and collaborates with patient care teams; makes rounds on ECLS patients

  • Develops, implements, and oversees the orientation programs for ECLS practitioners

  • Creates and implements initial and ongoing competency assessment for ECLS practitioners

  • Evaluates the practice environment concerning existing evidence and:

  • designs and implements quality improvement strategies to ensure that performance related to nursing sensitive indicators and ECLS registry metrics meets or exceeds established goals.

  • Identifies individual practice issues, develops improvement strategies, and contributes to performance appraisal for all nursing staff on assigned units.

  • Develops evaluation methods to measure safety and effectiveness for interventions and outcomes.

  • Use current research findings and other evidence to expand clinical knowledge, enhance role performance, and increase knowledge of professional issues.

  • Responsible for the future development, implementation, and evaluation of an ECLS transport team

  • Maintains ECLS equipment and supplies needed for successful initiation and ongoing intervention of ECLS

  • Articulates the strategy and operationalization of the UAMS Adult ECLS program. An ECLS program requires a multidisciplinary approach to care, and the program must be developed around a diverse group of stakeholders, including nurses, physicians, pharmacists, perfusionists, surgical teams, financial representatives, etc.

  • Provides direction to enhance the effectiveness of the multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary team and is responsible for maintaining the ECMO schedule.

  • Develops policies, protocols, and guidelines based on evidence to ensure appropriate ECLS initiation, management, and follow-up.

  • Provides leadership in the coordination and implementation of quality improvement activities around ECLS initiation, ongoing intervention, and follow-up with patients.

  • Responsible for establishing UAMS as a leader in ECLS by utilizing an Interprofessional team and patient-centric approach.

  • Analyzes and provides data and information about ECLS management and outcomes to ECLS Steering Committee and ECLS team members: patient safety & satisfaction, medical risks, quality outcomes, financial costs, etc.

  • Maintains data reporting to the ECLO ECMO registry

  • Reviews with quality management any major complications through M&M and shares findings with ECLS team members

  • Engages in a formal process seeking feedback regarding role performance with all stakeholders. Participates in peer review.

  • Formally disseminates findings through activities, such as presentations, publications, and consultation

  • Identifies opportunities for the generation and use of research

  • Knowledge Transfer

  • Maintains excellence in interpersonal skills and conflict management.

  • Builds credibility and trust with care providers/clinicians/leadership as a champion of the ECLS program.

  • Develops, implements and evaluates education and training programs relating to the ECLS program.

  • Responsible for the coordination of community outreach activities.

  • Serves as a liaison between patient care areas and professional services.

  • Maintains and/or disseminates changes in evidence, protocols, or standard work.

  • Communicates plans and decisions to stakeholders (e.g. committees, ECLS team members, administration).

  • Other duties as assigned.
