The salary range for this position takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs.

At WGU, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their position, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is:

Job Description

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primarily leader for the enterprise-wide site security program, including policy creation, implementation, and continuous improvement.
  • Partners with executive leadership and key stakeholders to design and implement site security strategies that protect employees, students, university assets, and facilities.
  • Leads the execution of site security operations and emergency response strategies across 10 current and 5 future locations in 4 time zones and 2 countries.
  • Manages one of the university's identified enterprise risks, with visibility and concern from executive leadership.
  • Directs and oversees all aspects of the site security function, including budgeting, staffing, deployment, and resource utilization.
  • Conducts regular risk assessments and audits to identify vulnerabilities, ensure compliance, and implement preventative measures.
  • Oversees physical site security operations including access control, surveillance, threat assessment, incident response, and fleet management.
  • Manages the physical sitate security of university property, leased spaces, employees, students, and guests, with special attention to evoliving risk profiles (e.g. university's leased spaces).
  • Develops and maintains comprehensive emergency management and response plans; ensures all university personnel are trained on their roles and responsibilities with regard to these plans.
  • Collaborates with local law enforcement and fire departments during emergencies and maintains alignment with emergency preparedness regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with relevant laws and policies, including FERPA and Title IX, by supporting enforcement and coordinating investigative support where necessary.
  • Leads and manages the site security team, including hiring, onboarding, training, and performance management, fostering a cohesive and effective team culture.
  • Provides mentorship and professional development to ensure team members have the skills and knowledge to perform at a high level.
  • Promotes a culture of site security awareness by developing and implementing training programs and communication initiatives for university employees.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with departments such as P&T, IT, Legal and Facilities to integrate site security protocols into business operations and projects.
  • Maintains and strengthens relationships with external partners, including law enforcement agencies, emergency responders, and site security vendors.
  • Oversees the use and maintenance of site security technologies, including access control systems and surveillance equipment, ensuring optimal performance and effectiveness.
  • Stays current on emergeing security technologies, threats, and regulatory requirements, recommends and implements enhancement to the site security program.
  • Serves as the subject matter expert on all security related requirements and initiatives.
  • Records and compiles statistics related to criminal and security incidents for analysis and reporting.
  • Leads investigations into incidents involving criminal activity or safety threats on campus, and oversees thret response protocols.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • In-depth knowledge of security technologies, incident management software and other security-related equipment, such as access control systems and CCTV surveillance.
  • Deep understanding of enterprise-level physical security operations, protocols, and infrastructure.
  • Knwoledge of emergency preparedness, business continuity, and crisis response planning.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks such as: FERPA, Title IX, Clery Act, OSHA, and local, state and federal laws related to safety, fire and criminal incident reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement security policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Proficiency in security assessments, audits and investigations at a large scale.
  • Experience leading or supporting investigations related to criminal activity, workplace violence, or other threats.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a diverse security team.
  • Attention to detail and a keen eye for identifying and mitigating security risks.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion and integrity.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies.
  • Experience managing multiple sites.
  • Ability to travel.

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice or a related field.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in security management, law enforcement or the armed forces, with a strong understanding of security principles and practices.
  • 1 year of previous leadership experience.

Experience in lieu of education

Equivalent relevant experience performing the essential functions of this job may substitute for education degree requirements. Generally, equivalent relevant experience is defined as 1 year of experience for 1 year of education and is the discretion of the hiring manager.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant professional certifications in security management or related areas, like Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Certified Security Manager (CSM).
  • Knowledge of emergency response planning and incident management.
  • Ability to adapt to changing security threats and technologies.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and best practices.
  • Training or experience in emergency response and crisis management.

Position & Application Details
