INSTRUCTIONAL COACH - BILITERACY (UPDATED)

Milwaukee Public Schools seeks exceptional Instructional Coach - Biliteracy candidates who are highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders.

A Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Instructional Coach - Biliteracy is a non-evaluative, non-supervisory teacher that works at the district level with the Bilingual Education Curriculum Specialist, English as a Second Language (ESL) Curriculum Specialist, and other departmental team members, to provide explicit Professional Development and coaching to teachers relative to the implementation of the Bilingual Pedagogical Framework in alignment with content and literacy adopted standards as well as district identified priorities, giving particular attention to the linguistic and academic needs of bilingual and English Learner students (EL). This position is assigned at the district level.

Education Requirements:

• A minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience in literacy with bilingual and EL students in a bilingual dual language program within Milwaukee Public Schools as a fully certified teacher is required.
• Master's degree preferred
• Reading Teacher, Reading Specialist preferred
• Valid five-year teaching or life time license:
  o 0023 or equivalent in bilingual certification is required.

Experience Requirements:

• Experience in providing professional development sessions related to bilingual instruction at the district level.
• Have attended and delivered at least four (4) school-level bilingual literacy instruction related professional development activities during the last three (3) years.
• Must respond to a literacy related scenario in writing (on demand; not part of application).
• Proficiency demonstrated in Spanish and in English, both oral and written.
• Strong background and knowledge of the philosophy and pedagogy of Bilingual Education and second language acquisition as well as assessments for bilingual and English Learner students.
• Strong background knowledge of the Milwaukee Public Schools K-12 curriculum.
• Experience in writing and implementing biliteracy curriculum related to the identified Bilingual Pedagogical Framework.

Essential Functions:

• Displays fluently written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
• Designs and presents district- and school-level professional development, as it relates to Bilingual/ESL instruction, and best practices for working with bilingual and EL students in the Bilingual Dual Language Program.
• Possesses deep knowledge and understanding of content and appropriate use of the bilingual dual language program curriculum guides, Common Course Plans, and district-adopted instructional materials/resources.
• Revises district curriculum to support instruction in Bilingual Dual Language Programs.
  Models effective lessons that integrate content, language, and literacy.
  Provides and models literacy strategies based on the components of the identified Bilingual Pedagogical Framework, including interdisciplinary strategies that match content area instructional designs and best practices for instructing bilingual and EL students in the Bilingual Dual Language Program.
• Supports content area and school-based coaches by facilitating professional dialogue that addresses lesson planning for bilingual and EL students in the Bilingual Dual Language Program.
• Uses data from multiple sources to determine the needs of individual schools and classrooms.
• Utilizes a cyclical coaching model to strategically build bilingual teacher capacity through ongoing data-driven reflection, modeling, and collaboration to improve bilingual dual language and EL instruction.
• Communicates suggestions and recommendations, based on evidence and research, to school teachers and support staff with Bilingual/ESL pedagogy, and best practices for working with bilingual and EL students in the Bilingual Dual Language Program.
• Assists school-based teams and MPS departments with efforts to implement district and school improvement plans for students to develop full English and Spanish proficiency in the Bilingual Dual Language Program.
• Understands and conveys the multi-tiered system of support for bilingual and EL students.
• Communicates the definition and goals of the Bilingual Dual Language and Stand-Alone ESL programs.
• Communicates how to support EL students in schools that do not have a Bilingual Dual Language or ESL program.
• Builds trust to facilitate change and plan strategically.
• Continuously develops knowledge of instruction and assessment of bilingual and EL students, special education, and data gathering, analysis, and presentation.
• Maintains accurate schedules and records; efficiently completes paperwork.
• Manages multiple initiatives, seek clarification, and communicate regularly with supervisor(s).
• Researches and relays relevant and current information around culturally and linguistically relevant aspects of the bilingual and EL student population in the Bilingual Dual Language Program.
• Collaborates with the Lau Compliance Center staff to support accurate and timely identification procedures for bilingual and EL students.
• Actively supports MPS Five Priorities for Success.
• Performs and completes other duties as assigned.

The salary range for this position starts at $60,987.04 and increases according to a set salary schedule which is based on years of work experience as a fully licensed teacher/pupil services educator in a K-12 setting and education beyond a bachelor's degree.
