JOB PURPOSE: To monitor the activities of residents of the shelter/center and to ensure compliance with shelter rules and expectations. Shelter Support Staff is also responsible for ensuring the safe, dignified, and efficient operation of mass care shelters during hurricane response activations. Under the direction of the Shelter Manager or designated lead, this position is responsible for supporting the daily operation of the shelter, assisting evacuees, and maintaining a secure, clean, and welcoming environment. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assist with shelter setup and demobilization, including cots, signage, supplies, and sanitation stations. * Conduct regular walkthroughs to ensure cleanliness, orderliness, and safety of shelter areas. * Help manage the distribution of meals, hygiene kits, water, linens, and other supplies. * Support sleeping area coordination and general shelter logistics. * Greet, screen, and register evacuees upon arrival using intake protocols. * Provide accurate information, reassurance, and basic support to individuals and families. * Respond respectfully to client questions and requests; escalate concerns to supervisors as needed. * Support individuals with functional or access needs, in coordination with disaster health and behavioral health teams. * Monitor for safety or security concerns and report incidents promptly. * Support infection control practices, including PPE usage, hygiene promotion, and isolation protocols (e.g., for COVID-19 or other illness). * Follow all FEMA, CDC, and county-level health and safety guidelines. * Coordinate and communicate effectively with Shelter Managers, and Behavioral Health Clinicians, and Volunteers. * Participate in shift briefings and debriefings. * Support orderly transitions between shifts and maintain accurate documentation. * Responsible for providing a safe, structured environment that meets the needs of the client while maintaining professional and acceptable boundaries at all times. * Maintain a comprehensive and accurate written record of events that occur during shifts, as well as thorough incident reports. * Consult with direct supervisor or supervisor on-duty regarding residents' personal needs and behavior. * Utilize positive behavioral management techniques including de-escalation. * Perform other duties as directed and assigned. * Demonstrate Exceptional customer service, in Everything you do, by placing the child, family, Veteran or client first to support our mission to "Empower people to build better lives for themselves, their families, and their communities." ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED required. EXPERIENCE: 2+ years' experience working with vulnerable populations including individuals with disabilities, seniors, children, or individuals experiencing homelessness, strongly preferred. CERTIFICATIONS: Must have National Incident Management System (NIMS) Core Curriculum Courses. IS-100.C: Introduction to the Incident Command System, ICS 100 IS-0200c. Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response, ICS 200 IS-700.B: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System IS-800.D: National Response Framework, An Introduction ATTENDANCE: Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance at such level as is determined in the employer's sole discretion. LICENSES: Driver's License with a clear record. VEHICLE: Must have daily use of a vehicle without prior notice. OTHER: Must be available and willing to travel to various locations and with such frequency as the business need dictates. Must not pose a direct threat or significant risk of substantial harm to the safety or health of himself/herself or others.
