The Foothill-De Anza Community College District is currently accepting applications for the grant-funded faculty position of
Counselor/Coordinator, Rising Scholars, De Anza College.
This is a temporary, 30-hours a week, 10-month position for the 2025-2026 academic year funded by the Rising Scholars Grant, renewable annually up through the 2027-2028 academic year. For the subsequent academic years in this grant cycle, this position is expected to be an 11-month assignment.
The Foothill - De Anza Community College District does not have a remote work policy. All employees are expected to be available to work in person and on-site per the requirement of the department.

JOB SUMMARY:Under the general direction of the Associate Dean, Learning Communities, the Academic Counselor-Coordinator will provide specialized academic, career, and personal counseling for students impacted by the justice system. This role is grounded in a commitment to equity, inclusion, and restorative justice, and works to reduce barriers to student success for justice-involved individuals. The counselor will collaborate closely with instructional departments, student services, and community-based organizations to provide comprehensive support tailored to the unique needs of Rising Scholars students. Flexible appointment hours, including some evenings and weekends, are required for events, workshops, and one-on-one student engagement.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
Counseling & Teaching:
- Provide equity-minded, trauma-informed, strengths-based, and culturally responsive academic, personal, and career counseling to justice-involved students.
- Develop individualized educational plans for certificate, degree, and transfer pathways, incorporating reentry-related supports and long-term academic goals.
- Teach counseling and personal development courses that promote college success, identity development, and community leadership for justice-involved students.
- Collaborate with faculty and classified professionals to embed academic counseling and success strategies in Rising Scholars-affiliated courses.
- Coordinate and deliver workshops on educational planning, navigating institutional systems, wellness, career exploration, and transfer readiness.
- Support students in understanding college and financial aid policies, registration processes, and academic petitions, especially in relation to prior justice-system involvement.
Student Engagement & Program Support:
- Meet regularly with Rising Scholars students in individual and group settings, both in-person and virtually, to support academic persistence and retention.
- Maintain consistent drop-in counseling hours both in person and online to meet program needs for current and potential students.
- Actively engage with internal and external organizations to best support students' needs and manage referrals between departments and/or agencies.
- Collaborate with basic needs programs, mental health services, and off-campus agencies (including reentry, housing, and legal aid providers) to ensure holistic student support.
- Assist in tracking student progress, program participation, and educational outcomes to help evaluate program effectiveness and meet grant and program reporting needs.
Campus & Community Collaboration:
- Work closely with the Student Success and Retentions Services (SSRS) faculty and classified professionals, peer mentors, faculty liaisons, and justice-involved student leaders to build a strong campus community.
- Conduct class presentations and participate in orientation, Summer Bridge, or other on-boarding programs and activities to matriculate new Rising Scholars students.
- Liaise with the college's Financial Aid, Admissions & Records, Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Transfer Center offices to advocate for the needs of justice-involved students.
- Participate in outreach events and functions that may include serving as a liaison with high schools, community-based organizations, and four-year colleges/universities.
- Partner with local prisons and community organizations to help identify, recruit, and support formerly incarcerated students who will be attending De Anza College.
Leadership & Professional Development:
- Serve as a campus advocate for justice-involved students and equity-minded counseling practices.
- Participate in Rising Scholars statewide learning communities, conferences, and professional development related to justice-involved populations.
- Collaborate with other cohort and retention programs to align services and leverage resources for student success.
- Assist in outreach and recruitment of prospective students from reentry programs and community-based organizations.
- Remain informed of federal or state laws and California Community College Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) policies and initiatives related to justice-involved student populations.
- Assist with managing current and prospective grants, including developing spending plans, and managing and reporting on financial expenditures.
Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, service on district and/or college committees, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also have the opportunity to participate in campus extra-curricular activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
- A Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR the equivalent

NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and experience in providing academic, personal, and career counseling to justice-involved students and BIPOC students, specifically first-generation and low-income college students through an intersectional lens.
- Experience in providing culturally responsive counseling strategies with a strengths-based approach, centering on students' abilities, potential, and resilience.
- Experience in teaching counseling, personal development, and career exploration courses.
- Experience with counseling related technology, educational planning software, and social media.
- Experience working in a student success program serving first-generation, low-income or justice-involved students.

HIRING RANGE: $72,704.00 - $119,405.00 annually plus benefits; actual placement is based on applicant's verified education and experience.
