SUMMARY:

American Councils provides arrival orientations throughout August to over 350 participants of the YES Program. The orientations take place Tuesday-Friday of each week in August, 2025. Orientations consist of groups of approximately 60-90 participants, divided into three or four classrooms. The Arrival Orientation Teacher is responsible for preparing program participants for their exchange experience. The teacher is responsible for planning arrival orientation sessions with their teaching partner and the local orientation team. Sessions are team taught in English with a YES program alumna/-us. Topics include American culture and family life and adapting to both, for example. Training and orientation materials are provided by American Councils. Worksite: July 31-Aug 2 Training of Teachers is held at American Councils offices on L St NW in Washington DC, and Arrival Orientations are held at a hotel near Dulles International Airport.

Primary Responsibilities Include:



  • Learn the established goals and objectives of the YES Program and the arrival orientation materials.
  • Attend two mandatory webinars in June and July (TBD) and the entire Training of Teachers workshop (TOT) held in Washington, D.C., beginning on July 31, 2025, to learn the assigned arrival orientation curriculum.
  • Live on-site with the students and other teaching teams throughout the duration of each orientation (Tuesday - Friday).
  • Work with American Councils staff to complete logistical tasks including:

    • planning meetings
    • participants' international arrivals on Tuesdays


  • Team-teach classes consisting of 20-28 participants, and assist with presentations and sessions for the entire orientation group.
  • Create a welcoming and well-organized classroom atmosphere that follows the orientation goals and schedule, and encourages active student participation.
  • Work and plan effectively with Alumni Instructors to co-facilitate sessions.
  • Assist American Councils staff with non-classroom responsibilities, as assigned.
  • During the arrival orientation, teachers are obligated to attend meals, evening programming, and other non-classroom activities.



Reports to: American Councils Orientation Coordinator and YES Program Manager (Inbound)

Qualifications

  • Attended and high school in the U.S., and has native English language skills.
  • Teaching experience, preferably with high school-aged students.
  • Experience with international exchange highly preferable.
  • Experience living with a host family and adapting to living in a new culture highly preferable.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to function with staff of different ages and cultural backgrounds.
  • Available to attend TOT at American Councils offices

  • Friday, August 1st - 9:00am - 5:00pm
  • Saturday, August 2nd - 9:30am - 5:00pm


  • Available to teach 3 orientation cycles:


  • Tuesday, August 5th - Thursday, August 7th
  • Tuesday, August 12th - Thursday, August 14th
  • Tuesday, August 19th - Thursday, August 21st



COMPENSATION:

Teachers will be paid $1200 per week, plus an additional $900 for the training period (approximately $4500 for the entire assignment). Invoices should be submitted bi-weekly to the American Councils Orientation Coordinator. Housing and meals will be provided during the orientation days (Tuesday mid-day through Thursday evening), and meals will also be provided during the training period.
