Grant Accounting Manager

The Grant Accounting Manager will oversee the post-award financial administration of sponsored projects and manage the financial compliance and fund accounting functions across NYGC. This role will be responsible for overseeing the accurate processing of payroll allocations, revenue drawdowns, indirect cost calculations, sequencing charges, and grant invoicing.

The Manager will have supervisory responsibilities, providing day-to-day oversight of assigned staff with effective authority over hiring, training, and performance management. Additionally, the Manager will lead initiatives in system oversight and process improvement, playing a critical role in maintaining and optimizing financial systems and operations. The Manager will focus on executing financial operations, enhancing systems integration, mentoring team members, and ensuring compliance to support the organization's research and operational funding sources. This position also supports the Finance and Research Administration team with external compliance and audit requirements including the Single audit, full audit (research activities only), 990 tax reporting (research activities only), and is responsible for the Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement (NICRA).

Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

Financial Operations and Compliance:

• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies for sponsored projects.
• Oversee payroll allocation to funding sources, revenue recognition, drawdowns, and indirect cost calculations.
• Review and approve grant-related invoices and journal entries.
• Support the grant closeout process, ensuring timely and accurate reconciliation.
• Assist in preparing financial data and reports for audits and other compliance activities. System Oversight and Process Improvement:
• Lead the design, implementation, testing, and support of the customized Labor & Effort Allocation solution for NYGC, ensuring seamless integration with the new General Ledger ERP system.
• Serve as a subject matter expert, providing valuable feedback and developing key resources to support successful adoption and ongoing functionality.
• Oversee the maintenance of the general ledger system for grant management, ensuring accurate financial and compliance records.
• Play a key role in integrating the General Ledger financial system (Sage) with Cayuse post-award modules, ensuring consistency in post-award financial management, including grant reporting and effort certification.
• Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance financial tracking, payroll allocation, and invoicing systems.
• Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and job aids for grant finance operations. Supervisory Responsibilities and Team Leadership:
• Provide day-to-day leadership and oversight to assigned staff, with effective authority over hiring, training, and performance management.
• Provide cross-functional oversight on post-award management while mentoring and supporting the growth of the grant finance team, ensuring high performance and strict compliance with Government and NYGC policies.
• Collaborate with other senior managers across departments to align grant financial operations and compliance with NYGC's mission and goals.

Leadership and Team Collaboration:

• Provide guidance and support to grant finance team members, fostering their development.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of financial operations with organizational goals.
• Act as a resource to pre- and post-award teams, offering expertise on financial processes and compliance requirements.

Project Support:

• Prepare financial documentation for reporting, including audits and tax filings.
• Assist in creating financial models and analyses to support research programs.
• Partner with administration teams to ensure budgets and post-award management align with grant requirements.

Requirements & Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required.
• Minimum of five years of experience in financial management, with at least two years in grant administration or sponsored projects.
• Proven supervisory or team leadership experience, with the ability to train and mentor staff.
• Proficiency in financial software and advanced knowledge of Excel.
• Knowledge of federal grant regulations, including OMB Uniform Guidance.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities. * Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present financial information clearly.
• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. The Finance & Accounting Manager position is eligible for the following types of flexible working arrangements:

• Flexible working: a voluntary work arrangement in which an eligible employee, with manager and HR approval, regularly works a modified daily schedule, instead of working NYGC's regular work hours (9am to 5pm ET).
• Partial ("hybrid") remote working: a voluntary work arrangement in which an eligible employee, with manager and HR approval, regularly works remotely one or more days each work week, instead of commuting to NYGC's New York City Office every day. The Finance & Accounting Manager will need to come onsite at least 2-3 days per week to NYGC's office or as needed. Hybrid employees may be asked to return to the workplace on a remote working day on occasion as needed, such as to attend a meeting. Commuting costs to NYGC's offices are the responsibility of the employee, including those who live outside the New York City metropolitan area.

Salary & Benefits

The pay range for this position is $108,000-125,000 per year; the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools.
