Description

The Palliative Care Chaplain is an integral member of the Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Team which delivers patient- and family-centered care to individuals of all ages living with serious illness. The goal of palliative care is to maximize the quality of life and align the individual's medical care with what matters most to them.

Key responsibilities of the Palliative Care Chaplain include evaluating the spiritual/religious needs of patients and families in both inpatient and ambulatory settings; providing spiritual care interventions tailored to the patient and family including religious rituals, exploration of existential questions, and grief support; engaging in family meetings and goal-setting discussions; making referrals to community clergy and other spiritual resources; providing education about palliative spiritual care to learners, including palliative fellows; engaging in effective interdisciplinary team collaboration; and supporting bereavement and other IDT processes.

This role is primarily located at Maine Medical Center in Portland and also provides care in the Scarborough palliative care clinic either in person, by phone, or via telehealth.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: Bachelor's or Master's level Degree in Theology, or a Master's Degree in Counseling or Divinity preferred. 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) may be required. 4 units of CPE preferred.
  2. License/Certifications: Currently licensed and/or ordained within a recognized faith community required. Board Certification by the APC, NACC, NAJC, CAPPE, or SCA preferred. Valid Driver's License required.
  3. Experience: Relevant experience in the provision of professional ministry or chaplaincy required. Experience working with patients/families dealing with life-threatening illness and death required.
