Position Summary:

The Chaplain provides compassionate and comprehensive spiritual and emotional support to patients, families, and hospital staff, especially during times of crisis, serious illness, surgery, or other medical challenges. Responsibilities include offering initial and follow-up spiritual care visits, responding to referrals from healthcare professionals and loved ones, and being available for crisis support. The Chaplain conducts thorough spiritual assessments and documents them accurately in the Electronic Medical Record, following hospital protocols. They collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams and actively participate in rounds to ensure patients receive holistic, person-centered care.

The ideal candidate will also coordinate and lead a range of departmental programs, including support groups, staff debriefings, memorial services, and spiritual education sessions, while serving on hospital committees as needed. The Chaplain performs religious rituals and services upon request, honoring the spiritual diversity of the hospital community through inclusive, interfaith, and culturally sensitive practices. Throughout all responsibilities, the Chaplain exemplifies the hospital's mission and values, fostering respectful, ethical, and HIPAA-compliant communication, especially when engaging with a patient's personal clergy or faith tradition.

Work Location: Washington, DC

Shift - 25 hours per week (8:00 am -1:00 pm), Monday-Friday, with some occasional weekends and holidays.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:



  • A Master of Divinity degree or an equivalent graduate-level theological degree from an accredited institution is required.


  • Four (4) units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program offered by the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or the National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), and is board certification eligible.
  • Must obtain Board Certification from a nationally recognized certifying body (e.g., APC, NACC, NAJC) within two years of employment.
  • Candidates must have an ecclesiastical endorsement from a recognized faith group and demonstrate the ability to minister effectively in a multi-faith, clinical setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic medical record (EMR) charting is required.
  • Professional spiritual care experience of at least three years in a clinical setting
  • Bilingual - Spanish preferred



Salary Range: Minimum $29.71/hour - Maximum $49.02/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
