The Opportunity

Under the very general direction of the Access Services Manager, the Access Services Associate is responsible for overseeing evening operations at Mann Library from Sunday through Thursday, including managing the help desk and securing the building at night. During summer and academic breaks, the role shifts focus to collection maintenance work that cannot be completed during the academic year, as well as on-going help desk support.

The Access Services Associate is responsible for:

  • Assisting patrons in person, by phone, and via email, offering guidance on library services such as interlibrary loan, course reserves, and specialized equipment, as well as providing basic technical support for computing, printing, and audiovisual needs.
  • Hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating student workers for both stacks and help desk duties
  • Works closely with student workers and the stacks assistant to maintain the library's physical collection. This includes coordinating shelf reading, updating labels, and collaborating with Collection Development staff on item transfers or withdrawals.
  • Using discretion and judgment in decision-making, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment, and following established emergency protocols as necessary.
  • Under the general direction of the Assistant Director of Access services, works in other unit libraries as needed, contributing to Access Services functions as listed above.

Hours and Location

This is a full-time position, requiring evening and weekend hours. The schedule shifts with library operating hours and department needs.

The Access Services Associate is a full-time position. The typical schedule involves 30 hours/week in Mann Library, covering evening hours, Sunday through Thursday during the academic year. The additional 9 hours may rotate among several other libraries to provide coverage based on needs. Daily hours will start between 2:00PM and 5:00PM and will end between 8:30PM and 12:30AM. The schedule shifts with library operating hours and with ongoing needs.

What We Need

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and exercise good judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.

If you have all those things, great! We have a few more things that we would prefer you to have, but it's ok if you don't.

  • Working knowledge of AV equipment and videoconferencing software/technology.
  • Familiarity with large-format (plotter) printers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work evening hours effectively.
