Essential Job Responsibilities:
The Vessel Operations Manager supervises all departmental personnel and is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the daily vessel cargo handling operations, and associated administrative functions in order to meet customer standards and maximize profits. Participates in the discipline and employment processes by making decisions to hire, promote/demote and terminate employment.
* Responsible for the supervision of subordinate personnel to ensure that all work is accomplished in a consistent manner with organizational requirements.
* Conduct employee training sessions on subjects such as hazardous material handling, employee orientations, quality improvements and computer usage.
* Participate in the settlements of on-the-job grievances.
* Implement schedule and policy changes.
* Ensure that continuous improvement is being done with regards to policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
* Monitor operations to ensure that staff members comply with administrative policies and procedures, safety rules, union contracts, and government regulations.
* Promote safe work activities by conducting safety audits, attending company safety meetings, and meeting with individual staff members.
* Monitor spending to ensure that expenses are consistent with approved budgets.
* Conduct investigations to determine causes of accidents and to improve safety procedures.
* Analyze expenditures and other financial information in order to develop plans, policies, and budgets for increasing profits and improving services.
* Set operations policies and standards, including determination of safety procedures.
* All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
* High school diploma or equivalent experience working in management
* 3 years managing related union labor
* Valid CPR certificate required
* Must have valid DL
* Thorough knowledge or principles of terminal operations
* Proven leadership skills.
* Experience with computerized operating systems
* Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
* Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability strongly desired
* Knowledge of local unions dispatching rules.
* Required to observe all safety and health requirements for container terminal environment.

Work Environment:
* Required job duties are performed in a climate-controlled office environment.
* The position may also be required to travel throughout the terminal
* The noise level in work environment is occasional.
* The ability to work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment.
