The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill invites applications for a full-time Vietnamese language instructor to teach three sections in fall 2025. We are seeking a skilled language instructor with a commitment to a proficiency-based approach to language teaching. Classes meet 3 days a week for 50 minutes. Fall classes are scheduled MWF at 9:05, 10:10, and 12:20 (Eastern time). The pay is $8,500 per section, for a total of $25,500 for the semester. This is a temporary position that carries no benefits. It's for one semester (Fall 2025) only. We will consider both applicants who would be able to teach in person on our campus, and also applicants outside the local area who would teach remotely. At least one course section will be taught remotely via Zoom regardless of the location of the instructor. If the instructor is remote, they must be located in the United States.
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies ( DAMES) is an academic unit in the College of Arts & Sciences. Our mission is to serve the undergraduate populations by offering majors and minors in a range of Asian and Middle Eastern languages and cultures. We also offer an MA program with two tracks: Interdisciplinary Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Chinese Studies. In addition, our faculty conduct research in the field of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and contribute to the College, the University, and the state through service and leadership.
Position Summary
This instructor will teach elementary and intermediate Vietnamese. Other responsibilities may include placement testing, holding office hours, supporting cultural enrichment activities, and participating in program development.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
MA, preferably in Vietnamese studies, language pedagogy, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Must be fluent in Vietnamese and English. Experience teaching Vietnamese as a second language at the university level, particularly in the US, is preferred. Experience with remote or hybrid teaching is preferred.
