Saint Louis University, a Catholic, Jesuit Institution dedicated to education, research and healthcare, seeks a subject specialist in the biomedical sciences for a position as medical reference librarian at the Medical Center Library (MCL). This position is responsible for assisting medical and health care faculty and students in the effective use of literature; participating in the library's program of instruction; coordinating research data management support; serving as liaison to one or more medical or health sciences departments; participating in developing library journal, book, and database collections in the assigned subject areas.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:

1. Reference and Liaison Services: Provides reference and liaison services in support of the study, research, teaching needs of students, faculty, and staff in-person, by phone, e-mail, chat, and other means of inquiry. Participates in staffing the reference desk. Cultivates and develops collaborative relationships with designated liaison departments; maintains active collegial relationships with faculty, students, clinicians, and other clienteles.

2. Teaching and Instruction: Develops and provides course-integrated and other library instruction. Provides library orientation and tours. Develops online tutorials and other electronic teaching materials.

3. Data management services: Collaborates with researchers at the Medical Center and with library colleagues to develop and provide data management services. Partners with researchers to evaluate data planning needs and to assess options for sharing data. Delivers data management instruction both in-person and online, including introduction and/or demonstration of software and tools. Creates and maintains learning materials describing guidelines, best practices, and services.

4. Collection Development and Access: Works with assigned liaison department users to develop collections that effectively support the study, research, teaching of faculty, students, and staff. Participates in the review of journal, book, and database collections. Gathers usage statistics and other data relevant to collection development decision-making. Maintains effective contacts with designated liaison departments and others concerning access to resources.

5. Professional Development: Participates actively in continuous professional development through professional conferences, CE courses, webinars, etc. Identifies opportunities to develop cooperative partnerships with faculty and other users for joint research and publication. Seeks ongoing opportunities for growth and development as librarian faculty.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge in a medical or health sciences subject area.

  • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and commitment to teaching.

  • Knowledge of health sciences databases (e.g., PubMed, CINAHL) preferred.

  • Experience with evidence synthesis, citation management, and scholarly communication is a plus.

  • Successful decision making, problem solving ability, and planning skills.

  • Strong user centered approach to library services and information technology.

  • Collegial and collaborative attitude.

  • Ability and motivation for continuous professional development and for growth as a faculty member.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and to work effectively in an environment of rapid development and change.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • MLS from an ALA accredited program.

  • Advanced education beyond the bachelor's degree in a health science discipline or data sciences.

  • Experience with research data management practice and instruction.

Rank/Grade Assistant or Associate Professor rank, non-tenure track, 12-month contract.
