Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Career Advisor position. The Career Advisor is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $65,000 per year, commensurate with experience.

The career advisor will be responsible for providing a broad range of career development guidance, including career advising through individual appointments and group sessions, career-related workshops and events, and digital engagement.

The advisor's primary focus will be providing quality advising and programming for first-years and sophomores as they begin the process of considering their career options. Under the leadership of the Program Director for Early Career Programs, this role will also deliver career education focused on student preparation for internships, including internship searching guidance, application support, resume/document reviews, and interview preparation. This individual will also co-train and supervise the Loeb Center's Peer Career Advisors (PCAs).

This role serves as the primary point of contact for students in the Meiklejohn Fellows Program, ensuring that the college's first-generation and/or low-income student population are well supported with access to internship opportunities in their first and second year.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Student Advising
  • Advise students on career exploration, internship/job search, skills development, networking, and relevant Loeb Center and Amherst College resources in individual appointments, group sessions or by email
  • Serve as primary career advisor for Meiklejohn Fellows; refer Fellows to other Loeb Center advisors, as appropriate
  • Conduct application and interview preparation, including practice interviews.
  • Review and provide feedback on application materials, such as resumes and cover letters
  • Help students assess their skills and interests through self-assessments such as CliftonStrengths and/or MBTI
  • Assist students in effectively using Handshake, LinkedIn, and other technology to enhance their career readiness and navigate their internship/job search


Career Education and Programming
  • Routinely conduct career-related workshops and events for students
  • Organize and implement orientation, welcome activities, and dedicated programming for incoming Meiklejohn Fellows cohorts
  • Identify, update, and/or create resources/materials to support students in their career exploration (e.g., guides, platforms, etc.)
  • Stay abreast of trends in internship recruitment, career development, and support for first-generation and/or low-income college students
  • Collaborate with colleagues on team projects and initiatives (e.g. Sophomore Summit)


Supervision
  • Hire, co-train and supervise student Peer Career Advisors (PCAs)


Qualifications:

Required
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 2-3 years of professional experience in career education or advising/coaching
  • Strong advising and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation of workshops
  • Demonstrated interest and commitment to supporting first-generation and/or low-income students
  • Clear understanding of the role of internships and career education initiatives
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated team player who takes initiative
  • Success working both independently and in cross-functional teams
  • Commitment to working some evenings and weekends
  • Required reference and background checks


Preferred
  • Master's degree with at least one year of relevant professional experience
  • Knowledge of student development theories
  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Prior experience supervising students
