The Opportunity

Our U.S. Communications team is seeking a Senior Policy Communications Advisor based in Washington, D.C.Reporting to the Director, Business Communications, and working in close collaboration with our Government Relations and Policy teams, this senior-level position involves developing and implementing communications strategies to inform, move and mobilize key stakeholders.

This role is ideal for a strategic communications professional with spokesperson experience; a passion for public policy and politics; a deep network of political, business and energy media contacts; and a solid understanding of today's communications landscape including the tools, platforms and technologies required to support effective communications.

What you'll do

Develop and Implement Communication Strategies and Content:
  • Develop and execute comprehensive communication plans aligned with policy and advocacy objectives
  • Write and disseminate various communication materials such as briefs, messaging, speeches, website content, social media posts
  • With a one-team mindset, coordinate and align with the greater communications department to amplify our voice and position across internal and external channels
  • Develop a keen understanding of our business and keep a pulse on evolving trends internally and throughout the energy industry and policy environment
  • Craft clear, persuasive messaging on complex policy issues for diverse audiences including policymakers, media, and the public
  • Develop and execute advocacy strategies and supporting content and collateral in support of new energy infrastructure projects and business priorities
Media Relations:
  • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and serve as a subject matter expert, securing media coverage, and responding to media inquiries
  • Identify proactive opportunities to contribute to the external conversation and pitch media
  • Serve as a spokesperson when needed, representing the organization to media and at public events
Advocacy and events:
  • Project management, executive speaker support, event support
  • Engage with various stakeholders, including industry associations, and the public, to ensure TC Energy's business priorities are reflected in advocacy efforts
  • Support project communications and related in-community events such as open houses as needed
Crisis Communication:
  • Support emergency response and crisis management and act as Public Information Officer as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in a related field
  • Six or more years' experience in a communications, journalism, public affairs or community relations role
  • Proven experience in issues and reputation management, crisis communications and project management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current affairs, the U.S. political and regulatory systems and policy development
  • Established media contacts and relationships, particularly in political media
  • Excellent writing skills and proven experience writing and executing communications and issues management plans
  • Strong understanding of media landscape and proven ability to secure media coverage
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively across teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in public or government affairs, advocacy organizations, or political campaigns
  • Public speaking experience
  • Digital communications and social media expertise
  • Understanding of the energy industry and relevant policy areas
  • Experience translating complex policy concepts into accessible language

This position requires candidates to:

  • Have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide a driver's abstract (record) for review
  • Overnight stays away from home base will be required (estimated up to 15% of work schedule)
  • Be part of an on-call rotation and provide emergency support as required
  • Possess, or be eligible to receive, a valid passport and maintain travel eligibility for Domestic, Cross Border, and International Travel (including the USA and Mexico)
