Job Description
The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO) plays an integral role in supporting the Chief Nursing Officer in overseeing the nursing staff and ensuring that the highest standards of patient care are maintained. The position involves a blend of administrative leadership and direct care oversight, ensuring that nursing operations align with hospital policies and comply with healthcare regulations. By fostering an environment of continuous improvement and professional development, the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer contributes to the enhancement of patient satisfaction and the overall performance of the healthcare facility. The role requires a unique combination of clinical expertise and managerial acumen to effectively address challenges and optimize the delivery of compassionate, quality care. The Assistant Chief Nursing Officer has operational and functional responsibility for a group of patient care areas and/or special projects or initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Oversees the implementation of high-quality nursing practices across the organization, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local regulations.
- Collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) in strategic planning and policy development to enhance nursing services and patient care.
- Implements patient satisfaction initiatives and measures outcomes to identify areas for improvement in nursing care and services.
- Advocates for the integration of new technology and evidence-based practices to enhance patient care and nursing efficiency.
- Leads emergency response efforts within the nursing department during crises, ensuring patient safety and continuity of care.
- In collaboration with the CNO, formulates policies and procedures consistent with recognized standards of professional practice and reflect the intent of regulatory standards and maintains authority, accountability, and responsibility for nursing services.
- Ensures continuous performance improvement initiatives are designed to measure and improve the quality of care delivered and are consistent with the organization priorities.
- Works collaboratively with other patient care and support departments, fostering a climate of open communication and mutual problem-solving activities. Initiates and participates in joint performance improvement activities.
- Assists in managing costs by continually seeking data that will identify opportunities and take action to eliminate non-value costs.
- Assumes primary responsibility for projects or task groups as assigned, keeping colleagues informed of the progress toward desired outcome.
- Actively participates with others in planning activities associated with design or implementation of renovation or new construction of patient care areas.
- Collaborates with nursing educators to ensure that identified learning needs of the nursing staff are promptly addressed and that orienteers receive the proper preparation to become independent practitioners.
- Develops and maintains close working relationships with physician colleagues and other healthcare providers in assigned areas. Collaborates with these individuals to set goals for the areas or develop action plans for patient care or system improvements.
- Attains all agreed to goals and objectives within specified time frames, as part of the organization's overall mission.
- Is responsible for department's operational excellence; ensures department delivers quality services in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and professional standards.
- Manages team members which include orientation, development and evaluation of personnel, and monitoring the provision of delivering quality services. Participates in the recruiting, interviewing and selecting of team members following policies, guidelines and applicable laws. Evaluates their performance relative to job goals and requirements. Provides coaching to staff, recommends in-service education programs, and ensures adherence to internal policies and standards.
- Is responsible for the fiscal management of division; assures proper utilization of organization's financial resources.
- Effectively communicates departmental, organization, and industry information to staff.
Qualifications
Minimum Education
- Technical Diploma/Certificate Nursing Required or
- Associates Degree Nursing Required or
- Bachelor's Degree Nursing Required and
- Master's Degree Business, Health Science, Nursing Required
Minimum Work Experience
- 5 years experience in management and supervisory nursing role; the most recent 3 of the last 5 years of leadership must have been in a direct leadership role in a hospital setting or direct patient care environment Required
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered Nurse Licensed State of Florida or eligible compact state Upon Hire Required
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Understanding of both federal and state regulations to ensure nursing practices and patient care services are in full compliance with legal standards.
- Knowledge of integrating new policies into existing workflows to maintain an environment of continuous improvement and adherence to regulations.
- Ability to enforce and interpret policies and procedures that protect patient safety and enhance clinical outcomes.
- Ability to monitor compliance, conducting audits, and spearheading quality improvement initiatives to elevate healthcare delivery.
- Skill in developing and executing training programs tailored to the changing needs of the nursing staff critical for delivering high-quality patient care and meeting healthcare regulations.
- Ability to assess the competencies of individuals and teams to promote ongoing professional growth and operational efficiency.
- Skill in allocating and managing financial resources, ensuring the nursing department operates within budget while achieving its goals.
- Ability to monitor, evaluate, and enhance healthcare outcomes to ensure nursing practices and patient care services meet established standards and regulations.
- Ability to develop, implement, and monitor adherence to evidence-based practices and policies is crucial for maintaining the highest quality of clinical care and safety for patients.
- Knowledge of and sill in training and guiding nursing staff in these standards, promoting an environment of continuous improvement and excellence in patient outcomes.
