Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm

Job Summary: The Accountant III prepares, reconciles, and audits budgets under minimal supervision. Prepares financial reports, invoices, schedules, and/or statements. Completes journal entries. Reviews, analyzes, and approves expenditures. Determines fund balances. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, University policies, and procedures. Provides guidance, trains, and/or may supervise entry-level accountants.

Additional Department Summary: Serves as a key financial and administrative resource. Facilitates staff and faculty hiring processes in coordination with Human Resources and the Office of Academic Affairs to ensure compliance and accuracy in employment offers and personnel actions. Manages the allocation and reconciliation of distance learning tuition revenues and expenses, collaborating with other colleges for consistency. The role is primarily focused on financial accounting and reporting, performing monthly reconciliations across multiple departments and funding sources, preparing journal entries, and conducting financial analyses to support strategic decision-making. Supports the annual budget process by tracking adjustments, managing merit allocations, and reviewing budget requests to align with organizational goals. Handles special projects and provides guidance on complex accounting issues.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related financial field and five (5) years of accounting experience; OR Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and three (3) years of accounting experience.

Skills and Knowledge: High level of competency working in Microsoft Excel creating complex financial spreadsheets using formulas and analysis tools. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. Clear communication skills, both written and verbally. Ability to serve customers by meeting needs in a timely and accurate manner.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Banner or similar accounting systems within a higher education setting. Strong background in fund accounting, with demonstrated knowledge of various fund types including gifts, endowments, and grants. CPA certification.
