About the Role We are looking for a Health Superintendent to oversee planning and project execution of Rio Tinto Borates, California Operations health, industrial hygiene, wellbeing and fit for work programs. The role continuously interacts with regulators, clinic staff, medical professionals, industrial hygiene personnel, and key California Operations personnel. The role will also partner with contractors to support the delivery of services and projects to appropriate health and industrial hygiene standards. This role is a great opportunity to lead the health and industrial hygiene programs for the California Operations including the development and maintenance of innovative health and hygiene management solutions. Reporting to the Rio Tinto Borates Health, Safety and Environment Business Partner, you will be:
- Overseeing the management of injuries and illnesses, including investigating causes, providing recommendations on injury classification and overseeing any workers compensation issues
- Providing direction and close partnership with the onsite medical clinic operations
- Leading the Industrial Hygiene plan and program of work across the Borates California operating facilities
- Lead the identification and resolution of complex health challenges by analyzing data, operational workflows, and health trends.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners and agencies to develop evidence-based strategies and implement effective health interventions.
- Exercise independent judgment in designing and executing health programs, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Continuously seek innovative solutions and leverage available resources to enhance health outcomes and operational efficiency.
- Championing health and sponsoring and leading initiatives to support employee mental and physical health and well-being
- Accountable for ensuring appropriate and timely delivery of all health and hygiene programs both tactical and strategic
- Recruit, train, mentor and develop high performing teams
- Developing and implementing key productivity improvements to drive operational efficiency
- A champion of our Rio Tinto Health and Safety and Environment standards and policies, ensuring regulatory standards are met.
About you To succeed in this role, you will have:
- A degree in an Occupational Health or hygiene related field
- Experience in medical clinic management within the mining sector, heavy industry or equivalent
- Experience working in a union environment and partnering with human resources personnel on health and hygiene matters
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic health programs especially around fatigue, fit for work and mental health and wellbeing
- A high level of communication skills including the ability to make presentations to company, public and professional groups
- Knowledge of Californian and US health regulations - Cal/OSHA, MSHA
It will also be beneficial if you have:
- Leadership experience and managing various internal and external stakeholders in a complex environment.
- Strong understanding of standards, policies and strategies as they relate to health and hygiene
