Nuclear Mechanical Engineer I / Nuclear Mechanical Engineer II - McGuire Nuclear Station

Job Summary

This position is within the McGuire Maintenance Support Engineering team as a Mechanical Engineer. The candidate will join a diverse peer team to support equipment preventive maintenance, monitoring and trending of equipment performance, provide technical oversight and engineering support to operations and maintenance organizations, and setting direction for the strategic long-range planning for power plant equipment to ensure optimum equipment reliability.

Nuclear Engineer I

This is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

Nuclear Engineer II

This is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
  • Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Qualifications

***This position can be hired as either a Nuclear Engineer I or Nuclear Engineer II depending on experience***

Nuclear Engineer I

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access

Nuclear Engineer II

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • AND 2 years minimum required related experience
  • A master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. Engineering degree
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management
  • Experience in the utility industry

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
