About the Role
The Assistant Shift Marine Manager facilitates the discharge and back loading of equipment to ensure the on-time departure from Anchorage and on-time arrival to our sister ports. Coordinates workflow to allow for a smooth and timely transition of operational needs. Remains enthusiastic and flexible throughout an ever-changing operational environment. Manages union work assignments, stevedoring operations, stowage planning, and vessel dispatches accurately. Maintains positive relationships with labor, contract vendors, and governmental regulatory agencies. Accounts for efficient yard operations which expedites the movement of cargo through the port. Maximizes vessel operational needs and equipment efficiencies to ensure productivity meets or exceeds standards. Ensures the monitoring of chassis and equipment within marine control. Improves profits by maximizing the offset formulas within contract requirements. Promotes, implements, and secures a safe operating environment for all employees and personnel during vessel and yard operations.
What you'll do:
- Manage and direct union workers' work assignments, stevedoring operations, stowage planning, and vessel scheduling. Develop relationships with labor, contract vendors, and governmental regulatory agencies.
- Work within Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) language.
- Accountable for efficient yard operations which expedites the movement of cargo through the port and eventually to the vessel.
- Manage reported inbound flat issues and gate identified outbound flat issues (oversize, damage, loose, or top-heavy loads) and decide on course of action, considering DOT requirements, safety, travel integrity, customer, and company expenses for rework.
- Maximize vessel operational needs and equipment efficiencies to ensure productivity meets or exceeds standards. Ensure the monitoring of chassis and equipment within Marine's control.
- Disciplines when warranted within the guidelines of Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) language.
- Develop the most efficient plan to discharge and backload a vessel inclusive of chassis needs, grounding operations and out-port requirements of equipment and space.
- Operate within and forecast the Marine operating budget.
- Coordinate land operations' activities with other terminals and division as well as with outside agencies.
- Direct involvement in management of applicable workforce, to include work practices, productivity, and discipline.
- Direct involvement with future port expansion and yard changes, as well as Marine building upgrades.
- Other projects and duties as assigned.
You have these skills:

- Ability to develop strategies, set priorities, and course of action to achieve objectives and position results. Anticipate operational needs, plan schedules with multi-tasking capabilities. Structure tasks for efficient operations and executives' administrative requirements.
- Coordinate projects to facilitate smooth, timely, and productive workflow while maintaining a big picture for strategic advantages.
- Strong managerial, supervisory, team-building, and decision-making skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage budgets.
And these qualifications:
- Minimum two (2) to three (3) years' experience in transportation management.
- Extensive PC software knowledge.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card.
- Ability to work various shifts and hours.
- Valid Alaska Driver's License.

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in an environment that is frequently outside in all types of weather and the noise level is moderate depending on the type of work being performed.
- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds.
- Ability to walk on ship walkways in adverse weather conditions.
