Position Purpose:

  • The Director of Transportation University is responsible for designing, scaling, and leading the enterprise-wide strategy for CDL-A, CDL-B, and NCCCO crane operator talent development and attraction. This leader will oversee all elements of our internal Transportation University (TU) which includes CDL Academy & Crane Academy, building a sustainable workforce pipeline that meets both current operational needs and future growth demands. The role blends talent strategy, compliance, safety, and field execution to produce highly skilled, safety-first professional drivers across our nationwide footprint.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute the strategic roadmap for Transportation University, aligning with company growth and workforce needs.
  • Oversee curriculum design for CDL-A, CDL-B, and NCCCO Crane Operator pathways, ensuring compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and NCCCO standards.
  • Build and lead a team of instructors, coordinators, and field mentors across multiple regions.
  • Partner with Fleet, Safety, HR, and Branch Leadership to align training with field deployment and job readiness.
  • Establish and manage program governance, recordkeeping, and audit readiness.
  • Track and report program KPIs: pass rates, placement, safety performance, retention, talent funnel, and ROI.
  • Continuously assess industry trends and regulatory changes to adapt training content and delivery.
  • Manage external vendor partnerships for third-party instruction, testing, or simulation support.
  • Champion a culture of safety, professionalism, and career mobility within the driver and crane operator community.

Direct Manager/Direct Reports:

  • Reports to Vice President, Learning and Development
  • Direct Reports: Program Manager, Facilitators, Coordinator, and Contractors

Travel Requirements:

  • Up to 50% travel to branch locations, regional training centers, vendor sites, and field operations.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and present for extended periods.
  • Ability to observe on-site driver and crane training in classroom, yard, and field environments.
  • Occasional lifting or moving of light equipment or training materials.

Working Conditions

  • Office-based with frequent visits to indoor & outdoor training facilities, branch locations, and field job sites
  • Potential exposure to outdoor weather, warehouse environments, and active yard operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in Transportation, Fleet Operations, or Talent Development leadership roles.
  • Proven success designing, implementing, or scaling CDL or heavy equipment training programs.
  • Strong knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and NCCCO compliance standards.
  • Experience managing cross-functional stakeholders in a distributed, blue-collar environment.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience standing up multi-state training academies or large workforce development initiatives.
  • Strong vendor management and contract negotiation experience.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred.

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Transportation Management, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field.

Minimum Years of Work Experience:

  • 10+ years in relevant roles, with at least 3-5 years in a senior leadership or director-level capacity.

Certifications:

  • CDL-A or CDL-B license preferred (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
  • NCCCO Crane Operator certification preferred.
  • OSHA 30, Smith System, or similar defensive driving certifications a plus.
