Role Summary

This role will oversee Rivian's Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs across multiple Research & Development sites, ensuring compliance, fostering a proactive safety culture, and driving continuous improvement. Reporting to the EHS Manager of Research and Development, this role serves as a key support function in managing EHS initiatives for assigned locations.

The position works cross-functionally with internal teams-including Engineering, Workplace, Security, Risk/Insurance, Facilities/Maintenance, and Construction-to implement and maintain safety programs. They collaborate closely with stakeholders to enhance site safety performance and promote organizational alignment on EHS priorities.


Responsibilities

  • Implement EHS programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance including Powered Industrial Vehicles, Fall Protection, Machine Guarding, Electrical Safety, Hazard Communication, Hazardous Waste, and Risk Assessments.

  • Conduct audits, inspections, and site evaluations to maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other federal, state, local and health regulatory standards.

  • Conduct complex operation or equipment safety buy offs (Rivian Safe Tag) and risk assessments and provide guidance to identify hazards, recommend solutions and ensure risk is mitigated or controlled to acceptable level.

  • Monitor EHS leading and lagging indicators, reporting findings to drive proactive safety measures.

  • Provide support to stakeholders to complete incident investigations and root cause analysis and provide recommendations for corrective actions.

  • Collaborate with business unit managers and employees to promote a "Find it, Fix it" safety mindset.

  • Support external audits/inspections with federal/state/local agencies.

  • Develop and/or maintain thermal response and emergency response plans.

  • Implement, train and lead emergency response teams (Rivian's Rapid Response teams or 3RT)

  • Act as incident commander, first responder or safety officer as needed in the event of emergency.

  • Must be able to provide clear direction, guidance and/or pertinent information to local employees, security, and emergency responders in the event of an emergency.

  • Review, investigate and address safety concerns reported by employees.

  • Review, assess and maintain existing chemical inventories and new chemical purchases for safety, health e.g. PPE and Industrial Hygiene assessments and environmental compliance considerations to determine EHS impacts.

  • Act as the primary resource for coaching and mentoring site teams in safety initiatives and regulatory compliance.

  • Establish and support safety committees and other safety initiatives to proactively drive safety culture.

  • Actively engage in supporting initiatives led by EHS leadership and ensure continuous improvement is built into all EHS programs and systems within the business unit.

  • Lead site safety excellence initiatives, including audits, inspections, and Gemba walks to identify gaps and enforce compliance.

  • Obtain certification as required to train employees in Red Cross First Aid/CPR, Powered Industrial Vehicles, Crane operations.


Qualifications

Required:

  • Experience: At least 3 years of relevant EHS experience is needed.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree is also required. n EHS, Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 2+ years related experience.
  • Travel: Up to 25% of the time including domestic and international travel.
  • Physical Demands:
    • Ability to stand, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
    • Ability to walk, climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
    • Ability to frequently lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Must collaborate effectively with internal EHS staff including Lead Specialists, Safety Engineer, Industrial Hygienist, etc. which may provide program or technical guidance, and recommendations that aim to align local or business unit practices with regulatory requirements, and Rivian policies.

    • EHS experience is required.

    • Strong foundational knowledge of occupational health, safety regulations, and compliance standards.

    • Ability to effectively conduct safety audits and assessments with guidance from EHS leadership.

    • Strong collaboration and communication skills to engage with cross-functional teams.

    • Detail-oriented with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

    • Demonstrates autonomy in execution.

    • Works independently on assignments, seeking guidance when needed.

    • Manages assignments with multiple inputs and deliverables, understanding connections between different work streams.

    • Communicates clear, specific performance standards, and reports on progress in own area.

    • Must influence others to achieve goals without direct oversight or authority.

    • Willingness to regularly travel to sites in their scope and region, work extended or non-standard shifts, including weekends, as required

Preferred:

  • At least 3 years in the field building and implementing EHS programs.
  • Holds or willingness to obtain relevant industry professional certification such as Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or similar.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Atlassian collaboration software including Confluence, Jira, Slack, Zoom, Workday.
