A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for a Research Vessel (R/V) Survey Sea-Going Support Technician to support the Population & Ecosystems Monitoring & Analysis Division (PEMAD)

Primary Function:
Provide technical support for annual fishery-independent surveys in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean to assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of fish and invertebrate species.

Duties/Responsibilities:



  • Participate in scientific research cruises for extended periods at sea (60-120 days annually).
  • Collect physical and biological fishery-independent data during marine resource surveys.
  • Identify, measure, and dissect fish and invertebrates collected on surveys.
  • Operate electronic data acquisition systems aboard research vessels to log biological and environmental data.
  • Contribute to gear standardization studies to ensure consistency of survey indices over time.
  • Assist in leading field parties or managing watch teams of up to seven people while at sea.
  • Troubleshoot and administer electronic data systems used during survey operations.
  • Prepare for cruises by supporting vessel staging and de-staging, assembling supplies, inspecting and maintaining sampling gear, and transporting equipment.
  • Summarize and analyze survey data post-cruise in collaboration with scientific staff.
  • Perform quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on collected data using standardized auditing procedures.
  • Maintain and organize an inventory of sampling hardware, such as measuring boards, motion-compensated scales, bar code scanners and printers, and touchscreen monitors.
  • Review and annotate benthic imagery under the direction of the Shellfish or Advanced Technology program leads.



Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' depth of experience. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • At least two (2) years of experience identifying fish and invertebrate species in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.
  • Experience working aboard research vessels conducting fishery-independent surveys.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of hands-on experience with bottom trawls and/or scallop and clam dredges.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience using electronic data acquisition systems during marine research.
  • At least 100 days at sea or two (2) years of experience conducting fishery-independent marine research.
  • Familiarity with acoustic net mensuration equipment such as Scanmar, Simrad, or Marport.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience maintaining and using sampling hardware, including electronic measuring boards, motion-compensated scales, bar code readers/printers, and touchscreen monitors.
  • Experience querying and summarizing data from relational databases (e.g., Oracle).
  • Must meet NOAA's Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) sea duty health requirements.
  • Ability to work at sea for extended periods (60-120 days annually).
  • Valid state driver's license with the ability to operate a federal vehicle.
  • Proof of a negative TB (PPD) test result within the past 12 months.



Travel:



  • Estimated 60-120 days/year at sea
  • Reimbursed at an hourly rate along with compensation for miles accrued on a personal vehicle as well as per diem at the specified Government rate.
