Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security. We are seeking a Logistics Specialist with experience in the areas of material management and inventory control within a manufacturing environment to support enrichment technology programs. This position requires strong working knowledge of warehousing processes, configuration management principles, quality assurance, and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) related system modules and how they provide an industry-focused solution to organization requirements. This position is within the Supply Chain Management Group, which is in the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division (ESED) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The Enrichment Science and Engineering Division serves the nation in two critical areas: advancing enrichment technologies and exploring stable isotope production and applications. The division leverages an elite staff of scientists, engineers, technicians, and business professionals with the world-leading capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to deliver groundbreaking advancements with a variety of applications, from national security to life-saving medical treatments. ESED is the national steward for the research, development, and demonstration of enrichment technologies.

ORNL is a recognized leader in centrifuge and electromagnetic enrichment technology. We are the stewards and dispensary of the nation's stable isotope inventory and have a legacy dating to the late 1940s. This division integrates the full enrichment process from chemical synthesis of feed materials through fabrication of the custom physical forms needed to support the user communities. You will work closely with a focused group of scientists, technicians, and engineers on challenging, fast paced technical projects in support of the DOE Isotope Program.

This has been a quickly expanding program at ORNL and offers significant opportunities for professional growth. The team demonstrates a collective excitement for the important work being accomplished and values creative solutions to developing technology and processes to solve the latest challenges. Successful development and deployment of isotope separation technologies requires an acute attention to detail and continued consideration of personnel and equipment safety.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily material movement and handling activities to support active production orders, from initial issue through fabrication and final shipment
  • Maintain alignment between material flow and production schedules by organizing work center queues according to current priorities
  • Ensure production data remains accurate within the warehousing system to enable effective planning, scheduling, and execution
  • Receive and transfer material between inventory locations, picking and staging as needed for job kits and ongoing assembly operations
  • Support job kitting for both Production and R&D areas in alignment with scheduled demand
  • Uphold 6S standards to keep the warehouse safe, organized, and efficient
  • Own warehouse inventory accuracy, location control, and data integrity, including coordination of semi-annual cycle counts
  • Serve as a key resource during engineering changes, proactively reviewing impacts on parts, availability, and material records
  • Monitor and correct material consumption reports, ensuring accurate backflush and scanning data within the ERP/WMS
  • Optimize warehouse layouts and workflows to meet current operational needs while maintaining flexibility for future growth
  • Engage regularly with cross-functional teams to coordinate solutions, improve processes, and maintain alignment on priorities

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS or BA degree in a related discipline with 5+ years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Hands-on background in warehouse operations including receiving, staging, and cycle counting
  • Solid understanding of supply chain and material management practices
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail
  • Clear and effective communication skills with leadership, project teams, and support staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS degree in a related field with 4 to 6 years of relevant experience
  • Experience using SAP or similar ERP systems
  • Strong knowledge of inventory control and material handling best practices
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and responsiveness
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work independently while contributing in a team setting
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, Visio)
  • Active DOE Q security clearance
