Overview

Perform all the functions of a Ships Safety Watch(SSW), CASCON Operator and Dept. 272 Point of Contact (POC) IAW NAVSEA 0905-485-6010 Manual for the Control of Testing and Ship Conditions and all local Shipyard Standard Procedure's (SSP), Multi-Department Direction's (MDD), and Single Department Direction's (SDD).

    As a SSW you will maintain a continuous patrol of the ship, topside and below decks, and the areas adjacent the ship. Maintain the Ship Safety Watch Logs, note and report all violations of prescribed procedures or other abnormalities pertaining to ship security, safety, and watertight integrity. Immediately report all other hazardous conditions (such as a change in draft, trim, or list). Particular attention shall be given to the following: smoke, fire, or abnormal temperatures, leaks in ship or temporary service systems, Door, hatch, and passageway clearance, including quick disconnects on cables, hoses, or lines, fire extinguishers properly located, with up-to-date weight inspection record, air bubbles below waterline and safety draft marks, trim, and list. In the event of a fire or flooding, they will be expected to report the casualty. After reporting the emergency condition, they shall, IAW procedures take action to control or limit the spread of fire and/or flooding.
  1. As a CASCON operator you will be required to operate the Shipyard CASCON system which will consist of sounding alarms, making public address announcements for causalities and specific announcements per written procedures. Communicate with EB's emergency response organizations, Ships Management and Ships Force on a regular basis.
  2. As a Department 272 POC you will be required to be available in the shipyard to respond to problems that are related to Ship Safety when a Ships Safety Officer is not available. They will be required to patrol the shipyard and during those patrols, review SSW and Roving Security Patrol watches logs for unusual occurrences.


Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 2 - 10 years of experience in work and/or testing involving submarine ship systems or shall hold a Navy qualification in submarines as a minimum per requirements.
  • Shall be knowledgeable of the characteristics, arrangement of compartments, tanks and accesses, and shipyard regulations, instructions, and orders pertaining to the security, safety, and watertight integrity of the ship to which assigned.
  • Knowledgeable in ship yard tagout procedures IAW SSP 7.39
  • A working knowledge of Watertight Integrity Permits (WIP), High Risk Evolutions, Safety Plan of the Day (SPOD) and Drills and the associated SSP's and DI's.

Preferred:

  • Qualified in Submarines


Skills

  • Be able to complete Electric Boat 6010 School
  • Be able to complete qualifications as a Ship Safety Watch and CASCON operator per department qualification card
