We are currently seeking aSubstation Protection & Controls Engineer - E3for ourPower Engineering & System Planninggroup that is based in our Charlotte, NC office. The protection and controls engineer will support substation engineering projects through conceptual and detailed design. P&C engineers will apply knowledge and experience to analyze, evaluate, and create new designs and drawings and revise existing designs and drawings with guidance from senior engineering personnel, as needed. Engineers will use their knowledge of components, arrangements, and standards to complete design packages including one-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and bills of material.

Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesof a successful candidate include but are not limited to:

  • Knowledge of electrical substations including schematics, wiring, protection single line diagrams, and relay, breaker and disconnect operations
  • Knowledge of electrical codes including NEC and NESC
  • Familiarity with common protection requirements, protection schemes, and application of digital relays
  • Should have basic knowledge of short circuit study, relay coordination, arc flash study and equipment sizing of substation (substation cabling, station service, battery bank etc.)
  • Knowledge of common substation configurations
  • Adaptation to various client drafting standards and procedures
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Ability to work on a team and on multiple projects
  • Ability to understand and incorporate comments and feedback
  • Personal time management skills and ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Attention to detail and pride in work product quality

Required Education & Experience:

  • BSEE from an accredited college or university
  • EIT Certification or higher
  • 5+ years of relevant experience with electric utility substations up to 345kV
  • Basic knowledge of protection & coordination studies such as protective relay coordination, settings calculations, short circuit study, arc flash study for HV and EHV transmission systems
  • Proficiency in protective relay coordination and settings calculations for HV and EHV transmission systems
  • Experience with relay and communication equipment
  • Experience with electrical system analysis software such as ASPEN, ETap, SKM,PSS/E or PSLF preferred

Knowledgeable of FERC and NERC requirements as they pertain to electric utility substation reliability requirements preferred
