Under the general direction of the Director of Cardiology Services, the Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer performs diagnostic echocardiograms for subsequent interpretation by a Cardiologist.

I. Major Responsibilities:

Echocardiogram Performance
1. Performs M-mode, 2D, and color/Doppler exams according to ARDMS protocol.
2. Utilizes multiple patient positions and equipment settings for optimal imaging.
3. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology.

Clinical Communication and Documentation
1. Obtains complete clinical history from patient and/or chart.
2. Writes preliminary technical interpretation of echo results.
3. Captures diagnostic-quality digital loops for cardiologist review.

Transesophageal Echocardiograms (TEE)
1. Prepares patient, room, and equipment for TEE.
2. Assists cardiologist with equipment settings during procedure.
3. Performs post-procedure tasks including disinfection and restocking.

Equipment Maintenance and Cleaning
1. Cleans exam tables, probes, and ECG cables daily.
2. Disinfects TEE probes per protocol.
3. Cleans machine filters regularly.

Department Readiness and Supply Management
1. Maintains records and tapes of exams and ensures accurate billing.
2. Orders and stocks necessary supplies.

Collaboration Across Departments
1. Coordinates with other cardiovascular and hospital testing areas.
2. Assists with patient preparation and stress testing.
3. Schedules echo exams in conjunction with other tests.

Quality Assurance and Mentorship
1. Maintains exam quality records and monthly statistics.
2. Keeps service and repair logs and schedules maintenance.
3. Orients and mentors new sonographers.

Professional Development
1. Maintains continuing education credits.
2. Attends relevant seminars and reads current literature.
3. Reviews echo results with cardiologists.

Heartlab System Management
1. Stores patient images accurately using echo carts.
2. Edits digital loops and demographic data.
3. Performs regular DVD backups of patient images and reports.

Age-Specific Competency
1. Applies knowledge of growth and development stages to patient care.
2. Communicates appropriately with patients of all ages.
3. Provides age-appropriate care and support.

II. Position Qualifications:
License/Certification/Education

Required:
1. 1 year of formal training or equivalent experience with equipment
2. Current CPR certification
Preferred:
1. College degree
2. RDCS certification or eligibility

Experience/Skills
Required:
1. 2-3 years of dedicated cardiac experience (excluding training)
Preferred:
1. None specified
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
