Position Summary Information






Primary Purpose
The Director of Spirit and Community Engagement serves as a key leader in cultivating a dynamic and inclusive campus culture through strategic spirit programming and community involvement. Reporting jointly to the divisions of Student Life and Athletics, the Director plays a central role in energizing school spirit, enhancing student involvement, and fostering pride in institutional identity.
This position oversees the recruitment, hiring, training, and development of professional staff, student leaders, and participants across spirit groups, including the Tiger Dancers, Cheer Team, Pep Band, and Mascot program. The Director will lead efforts to strengthen the synergy between student life initiatives and athletic traditions, ensuring spirit and pride are embedded in the everyday experience of students, alumni, and campus stakeholders.
Essential Functions


  • Spirit Program Leadership

    • Oversee all operational aspects of spirit groups, including team selection, choreography/music direction, rehearsal scheduling, event coordination, and travel logistics.
    • Ensure each group operates with excellence, school pride, and in alignment with university values and safety protocols.




  • Student Life Collaboration

    • Work closely with Student Life staff to integrate spirit programming into new student orientation, Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Homecoming, campus traditions, and signature student events.
    • Serve as a key collaborator with departments such as Residential Life, Cultural Centers, Student Government, and Student Activities to foster inclusive and diverse expressions of campus pride.
    • Support and co-lead initiatives that uplift student identity, belonging, and leadership through spirited engagement.
    • Attend Student Life meetings: Divisional meetings, Directors Meetings, Student Meetings (ASUOP, RAs, trainings, etc) and department meetings.



  • Campus-Wide Spirit Initiatives

    • Lead the development of cross-campus campaigns and initiatives that build a shared sense of community and belonging among students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
    • Plan and implement large-scale spirit events, pep rallies, themed weeks, and community celebrations in partnership with university departments.
    • Establish and maintain traditions that connect current students with university history and values while inviting innovation and creativity.



  • Athletics Partnership

    • Collaborate with Athletics staff and coaches to align spirit programming with game day experiences, athletic promotions, and special events.
    • Coordinate spirit team participation at home games, tournaments, championship events, and university athletic celebrations.



  • Leadership and Development

    • Recruit, train, and supervise professional staff and student leaders involved in spirit teams, fostering their personal and professional growth.
    • Serve as an advisor, mentor, and role model to students, promoting leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and a passion for university engagement.



  • Administrative Oversight

    • Develop and manage program budgets, including supplies, equipment, uniforms, and travel.
    • Ensure compliance with university risk management policies and WCC regulations, where applicable.
    • Evaluate program impact and effectiveness through data collection, assessment, and student feedback.



  • Community Engagement

    • Partner with Alumni Relations, Strategic Communications, and local organizations to amplify school spirit both on and off campus.
    • Create opportunities for students to serve as ambassadors of university pride within the community.



This position serves as Campus Security Authority ( CSA) as outlined by the Clery Act. CSAs have federally mandated responsibilities to report crimes that are reported to them.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in student affairs, campus engagement, athletics, or spirit program management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • Experience in a higher education setting with cross-divisional reporting or collaboration.
  • Background in choreography, music coordination, or mascot programming.
  • Familiarity with risk management in student travel and physical activity.
  • Knowledge of WCC rules and game day operations.

Work is performed during standard hours; Additional hours may be required to meet business needs or deadlines.
Hiring Range $75,000-$85,000 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
