Reporting to the Director of Employment & Compensation within the Office of Human Resources, this position plays a key role in supporting the University's employment immigration program. The Immigration Specialist is responsible for preparing and filing employment immigration petitions and collaborating directly with external counsel on permanent residency requests. Additionally, this role provides critical support with I-9 employment verification and re-verification for international employees, and assists in managing the J-1 check-in process.

Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree
Four (4) years employment immigration experience.
Equivalent years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Five (5) years of employment immigration experience in higher education or as a paralegal.
  • Experience with immigration software.
  • Experience using a ticketing system.
  • Experience with software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • One (1) or more years of experience working in the Human Resources field.

  • PHR, SPHR, SHRM, or related certification.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Exceptional customer service to all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of faculty and staff.
  • Possesses current knowledge of immigration and DOL regulations, hiring processes, recruitment, and documents relating to the employment of foreign nationals.
  • Ability to develop and deliver training and current information to foreign nationals, hiring managers, and other relevant campus stakeholders.

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administers all aspects of immigration-related employment-based petitions (H-1B and permanent residency), ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Possesses familiarity with J visas and understands federal regulations governing visa statuses.
  • Assists with the development, integration, and implementation of policies regarding hiring practices for foreign nationals.
  • Recommends, develops, and presents employment immigration content for training purposes, workshops, and materials aimed at communicating the university's immigration processes.
  • Presents regular immigration updates to HR and campus stakeholders and provides timely updates via various forums.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation relating to visas, petitions, and any other information related to employment-based immigration.
  • Collaborates with the International Student Center on various immigration matters.
  • Assists with onboarding of graduate-level assistants.
  • Organizes and maintains the immigration caseload and effectively communicates statuses as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable employment immigration rules and regulations, remaining abreast of changing employment immigration regulations and best practices.
  • Evaluates needs, changes in technology and regulations, and engages in business process adjustments to maintain service levels.
  • Assists in updating the employment immigration website as needed.
  • Serves as an employment immigration resource for campus stakeholders.

Remote Work Notice
A hybrid remote work schedule is available with manager approval. Employees must be located within the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex area and have the ability to be on campus for work activities as scheduled and/or with 24-hour notice. Completion and approval of a UT Dallas Remote Work Agreement will be required upon employment, and use of personal internet and other standard equipment may be required. Remote work arrangements are subject to regular review and re-approval and may be canceled at any time.
