Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, the Director Solar Development will manage and lead the Solar and Hybrid Solar+Storage Development team to deliver renewable and storage investment opportunities across the East or West region. The Director will manage a growing pipeline of projects, with a focus on advancing and delivering >3 GW of existing mid and late-stage projects in the region. This role is best suited for an experienced developer with demonstrated results leading a team and bringing projects to construction handover. Working in concert with internal and external experts, responsibilities include project management, landowner and community relations, obtaining land use permits, shepherding projects through high-profile interconnection decision points, and finalizing offtake contracts, GIAs, and EPC agreements to carry a project through final investment decisions and ultimately to NTP. This position is critical for Deriva Energy to realize ambitious growth aspirations. We are seeking a highly motivated individual, with an entrepreneurial mindset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to develop, manage, and execute a pipeline of competitive, customer-centric project investment opportunities.

  • Succeed in a fast paced, dynamic, competitive marketplace

    • Strong understanding of project drivers & competition to deliver project investment opportunities

    • Commercial understanding of value and risk drivers related to project technical aspects (interconnection, resource, constructability, design, etc.)

    • Ability to effectively negotiate commercial terms with counterparties to maximize value to The Company in a professional and ethical manner

  • Identify strategic business opportunities

    • Mitigate risk and successfully structure projects through complementary project contracts

    • Perform risk assessments, business impact analyses and strategy selection

    • Evaluate applicable laws and regulations to determine project impacts

    • Strong understanding of financial drivers

  • Bring strong customer focus & understanding of customer needs

    • Work closely with the customer at all levels of the organization (C-Level executives to procurement personnel)

    • Understand customer needs and structure specific business solutions

  • Lead solar and hybrid solar+storage development on mid-late stage pipeline

    • Manage regional development budget and prudently spend company resources to create investment opportunities

    • Identify opportunities to prudently advance project while minimizing risk

  • Manage project team members and work effectively with technical subject matter experts

    • Work across functional areas to foster collaboration and cooperation to achieve shared goals

    • Provide direction to internal stakeholders such as, engineering, environmental, underwriting, operations, treasury, risk, tax, finance, accounting, insurance, corporate communications, etc. to achieve project goals

    • Support the finance, construction, and operations teams to achieve successful project outcomes

  • Build and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with external stakeholders including customers, project partners, local officials, community members, landowners, transmission owners, environmental agencies, regulatory bodies, etc.

    • Frequent travel required to meet with key stakeholders

  • Spearhead project approvals

    • Prepare and participate in required transaction approval documentation and presentations for senior management approval and deal closure.

    • Interact with senior management for reporting, strategy development and execution planning.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Engineering or other related discipline

  • In addition to the degree above, eight (8) or more years of experience

  • In lieu of bachelor's degree, high school diploma/GED AND 13 years or more years of related work experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Engineering

  • One (1) or more years of experience managing direct reports

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in utility-scale renewable energy development

  • Extensive knowledge of wholesale electricity markets, interconnection process, real estate contracts, tax abatements and renewable energy technologies & policy incentives

  • Proven experience developing and successfully building renewable energy projects.

  • Demonstrated project success in PJM, MISO, SPP and/or SERC markets

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, optimistic self-starter

  • Financial and business acumen, business strategy, executive level presentation

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the desire to work in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and to meet deadlines and complete time-sensitive duties

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a flat organization, successfully leveraging the expertise of multiple colleagues in different lines of reporting

  • Ability to multi-task and arbitrate between conflicting priorities

  • Ability to take ownership over tasks and work proactively.

  • Excellent communication, project management and team-building skills experience working with cross- functional internal and external technical advisors and stakeholders.

Working Conditions

  • Regionally based with preference given to those in Charlotte, N.C.

  • Office position (hybrid)
