About the Position

The Accounting Specialist monitors, processes, and ensures accounting practices and security controls for the various primary functions of the Financial Management Bureau related to inmate accounting, travel, accounts payable and receivable. This position maintains compliance with state and federal laws, and County and MCSO Policies and Procedures.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience

  • Two (2) years of accounting, bookkeeping or specialized administrative experience.

OR

Combined education and experience qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance or in a related field may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Other requirements

  • Training that may be provided on-the-job: FEMA NIMS - IS100 and 700; Safety; Payroll; PREA.
  • Prior to hiring, the Sheriff's Office requires that all candidates pass a background review.

Our Preferred Candidate has

  • Associate's Degree or higher in Accounting or related field.
  • Accounts payableand receivable, cash receipting, or travel processing experience.

ESSENTIAL JOB TASKS:

The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.

  • Prepares journal vouchers and other general ledger entries.
  • Data entry for accounting transactions into General Ledger.
  • Audits and reconciles billing.
  • Process RICO disbursements, maintain ledgers, registers, and records.
  • Process daily CACTAS reports and updates including bonds and fines, and inmate funds accounts for distribution to command staff.
  • Monitors, balances, and reconciles funds as required.
  • Reconciles cash storage balance reports.
  • Monitors and verifies the accuracy of all checks and electronic transfers.
  • Processes bank deposits.
  • Researches and resolves inmate grievances regarding inmate accounts.
  • Records daily cash receipts for account receivables.
  • Walks over to the Department of Finance twice a week.
  • Assist the travel coordinator with daily duties as assigned.
  • Back-up the Inmate Account Specialist duties as needed.

This position requires walking .25 miles to an adjacent building twice a week.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate, up to midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity and budgetary allowances.
