Symetra has an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Associate Underwriter!

About the role

The Associate Underwriter - Group will develop knowledge of insurance medicine, underwriting principles, and Life & Disability insurance industry practices. The Associate Underwriter - Group will review Group life & Disability insurance Evidence of Insurability (EOI) applications and classify mortality risks in a sound, objective and consistent manner by applying company guidelines and philosophies. They will be responsible for Analyzing applications, Reviewing for compliance, data integrity, morbidity/mortality. They will be assessing/determining the risk of insuring a client, making decisions (Decide whether to accept an application), negotiating decision with client or broker/business partner, recording, keep detailed records of case specific notes, guidelines, reason for decision, collaborating work with other professionals to gather information, provide customer service or feedback/follow up and queue management trying to streamline personal work process to maintain/track SLA

What you'll do in this role




  • Develop a basic understanding of underwriting philosophies, documentation and techniques.
  • Understand systems, and any associated medical conditions, as well as becoming familiar with commonly prescribed medications.
  • Establish a baseline understanding of non-medical risks and their effects on risk evaluation.
  • Communicate effectively with applicants, policyholders and Account Managers to explain underwriting decisions and provide current application status. Answer and appropriately resolve a proportionate share of customer requests.
  • Review Evidence of Insurability applications and may underwrite standard and substandard risks within authorized limits of authority in accordance with department guidelines, including determining whether to accept or reject the application by evaluation of applicant's medical history, financial background, insurable interest and financial need.

Compensation

Hourly Salary Range: $26.30- $43.87 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

  • Have Strong analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Be a proactive communicator with effective written and interpersonal skills.
  • Documented ability to sustain a high quality of work in a production-based environment.
  • Have a High School diploma or equivalent experience required
