Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a System Administrator IV for the Office of Advanced Research Computing (
OARC) within the Office of Information Technology (
OIT). The Office of Information Technology's Office of Advanced Research Computing (
OARC) was established in 2015 as a university-wide office to provide advanced computing and data-enabled science that empowers research, learning, and societal engagement. Reporting to our Director of Advanced Computing Infrastructure, the candidate will be working within our cyberinfrastructure group of Systems Engineers, focusing on support of the Rutgers Clinical and Research Data Warehouse (
CRDW). We are a Linux shop that support a number of high-performance clusters, as well as support for systems like RedCap and
CRDW and a host of other technologies. We always have a few interesting proof-of-concept projects brewing on the side. We support people who are curing cancer and people who are understanding global warming. To do that we need to build and run large-scale, distributed, stable fault-tolerant systems and we are looking for a few people to join us to help.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
- Scales systems sustainably, through automation, and evolve systems by pushing for changes that improve reliability and velocity.
- Engages in and improve the whole lifecycle of robust scaling infrastructure and services.
- Maintains, monitors and improves of our systems at OARC.-OARC uses gpfs, slurm, warewulf and infiniband. The candidate will be expected to learn and become skillful with this software and equipment as well as other open source tools used in a linux HPC environment.
- Automates routine tasks like reporting, provisioning, monitoring, etc.
- Develops professionally (via training, conferences, etc).
- Transfers knowledge: Sharing what you know and what you are doing with others. These duties should result in OARC hosting large, stable robust systems quickly and help OARC respond to users' needs quickly and efficiently.
- Administrations and maintenances of hardware, operating system, networking, account management, and security. Responsible for deployment and support of data storage and backup.
- Manages end-user accounts and usage utilizing queuing software (schedulers) and other tools.
- Provides system services and analyze system performance for stakeholders and intended end users.
- Performs all activities necessary to activate a new operating system or new release of an existing system, including analysis, design, implementation, and related documentation.
- Analyzes systems performance and modifies programs to increase the efficiency of the operation.
- Reinstates integrity of system as quickly as possible following an outage in order to minimize item and data loss.
- Supports researcher using CRDW and their use of scientific software: installation and troubleshooting of scientific software. Experience or at least familiarity with scientific languages, python, R, julia, fortran and installation and support of research software programs ( SAS, Matlab, stata, spss, jupyter , git, conda, R-Sudio) and containers is needed.
- Participatesin professional development activities (training, conferences, etc).
- Researches new technologies, processes, and methodologies.
- Works with the rest of the OARC team in development of training materials user education.
- Understands and adheres to Rutgers' compliance standards as they appear in RBHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
- Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state, and Rutgers regulations, laws, and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- A bachelor's degree preferably in computer science or engineering plus five (5) years of relevant experience in linux system administration, systems programming or research computing, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- At least, two (2) of the following areas: Working with researcher in an academic environment, know of software used in research, HPC system administration including Linux, cluster job schedulers, parallel storage and file systems, general IP networking, high speed low-latency network interconnects, familiarity with common scripting languages/programming languages, configuration management tools or programming methodologies, cybersecurity.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Master's degree in a technical or science discipline.
- Experience as a system administration of a high-performance computing system.
- Other areas in which experience is preferred include cybersecurity, network administration, numerical computing, IT planning, and programming, configuration management tools, databases.
- Experience or at least familiarity with scientific languages, python, R, julia, fortran and installation and support of research software programs (SAS, Matlab, stata, spss, jupyter , git, conda, R-Sudio).
- Experience or at least familiarity with containers and virtual machines.
- Have a comfort level working directly with researchers in finding solutions to demanding computational problems.
