Job Description

The University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) is seeking a Senior Scientist to lead and support our nuclear materials research program. This position reports to the Associate Director of Research and Education and plays a vital role in developing MURR's capabilities in post-irradiation examination (PIE) and advanced materials testing.

With global electricity demand projected to grow annually to support AI data centers, and over 90% of that demand expected to be met by renewables and nuclear power, there is increasing urgency for innovation in nuclear technologies. A key part of this growth includes post irradiation material research.

MURR is one of the few university-based facilities in the United States capable of supporting PIE research. This position will help lead the effort to develop experimental infrastructure and collaborative research programs that support the future of nuclear materials science.

Key Duties Performed by This Position Will Include

* Develop and maintain externally funded research collaborations with faculty across the University of Missouri System and beyond.
* Design and perform material characterization experiments on irradiated materials using hot cells, glove boxes, or shielded enclosures.
* Lead the development of procedures and safety protocols for handling radioactive material.
* Plan and conduct material irradiation experiments using the MU Research Reactor.
* Contribute to the preparation of competitive grant proposals and peer-reviewed publications.
* Assist in mentoring students and junior researchers and coordinating activities of the nuclear materials group.

Monday - Friday, 8AM - 5PM

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

* Ph.D. in engineering, materials science, nuclear science, or a related STEM field.
* Demonstrated experience working in radiation laboratories or handling radioactive materials.
* Experience conducting post-irradiation examination (PIE) of materials.
* Expertise in mechanical testing (e.g., stress-strain analysis) of irradiated specimens.
* Knowledge of radiation safety practices and regulatory compliance.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $75,000 - $85,000 per year
Grade: GGS 011
