The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a water resources scientist with a hydrology and statistics focus to join our Bismarck, North Dakota, team. In this hybrid role, you will provide technical expertise within the Water Resources group, working on projects with a diverse team of engineers and scientists, completing water resources/civil engineering and related technical assignments, presenting technical information to a variety of audiences, and mentoring staff. Assignments may include hydrologic assessment of wet and dry extreme precipitation and flow events, including consideration of climate variability, persistence, and change; providing guidance on modeling rainfall, snowmelt, and rain-on-snowmelt events; development of inflow hydrographs and flow duration curves; flood frequency analysis and development of hydrologic hazard curves; hydrologic engineering analysis; risk analyses; water-quality studies; report writing; technical presentations; supporting internal hydrology and statistics related initiatives; and mentoring staff. The work may at times involve short-term, out-of-town assignments.

A successful person in this role is motivated by and emphasizes client service by providing quality deliverables. They enjoy working independently and as part of a team, using their expertise and technical skills to add to each project. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, excellent organizational skills, including scheduling, prioritizing, and follow-up, are key to success. Additionally, this role requires the ability to effectively present technical information to diverse audiences.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Hydrologic analysis: Hydrologic analysis related to stormwater management, flood control, dam assessments, and reservoir operation.

  • Statistical and data analysis: Evaluation and interpretation of different types of spatial and temporal datasets, including water quality.

  • Reporting: Assist with the preparation of technical reports, working with clients, permitting agencies, and public officials.

  • Presentation: Provide written and oral technical guidance; present findings to project teams, clients, and decision-making bodies; and present at conferences and technical meetings.

  • Business development: Help with strategy development for pursuits with new and existing clients.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: Anticipated range of $130,000-145,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Hybrid: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of Barr's Bismarck, North Dakota, office.

  • Work environment: Ability to work in an office environment. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: Master's degree in hydrology, statistics, civil or environmental engineering, or a related degree.

  • Experience: Minimum 15 years of relevant water resources experience.

    • Ability to perform probability and statistical analysis of hydrological and water-quality datasets.

    • Familiarity with snowmelt methods.

    • Expertise on treatment of non-stationary time series.

    • Strong technical and problem-solving skills.

  • Software: Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and PDF editing software. Familiarity with coding and a variety of software packages and modeling tools, such as R or Python;HEC-SSP or peakFQ; HEC-HMS or other watershed modeling software; USACE time series toolbox or similar analysis tools; and other statistical packages.

  • Driver's license: Possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • PhD in hydrology, statistics, civil or environmental engineering, or a related field.

  • 20+ years of water resources experience with a focus on hydrology and statistics.

  • Demonstrated technical leadership and subject matter expertise, evidenced by active engagement in professional or scientific communities.
