Job Description

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory is a full-service laboratory accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). It provides in-depth laboratory diagnostic support to veterinary practitioners, livestock and poultry industry interests, companion animal interests, wildlife conservationists, scientists utilizing animals in their research throughout the university, state and regulatory officials, and clinicians of the MU Veterinary Health Center. The laboratory handles more than 200,000 specimens a year and serves Missouri's 114 counties and surrounding states by performing over 170,000 diagnostic tests annually. The VMDL also conducts fundamental and applied research to address animal health and public health issues.

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) is seeking to hire a Clinical Lab Specialist I to work in the One Health Rabies/Serology Section.

Representative Duties Include:

Perform rabies serology assays

  • Perform various serology and immunology assays, such as accessioning samples, preparing the set documentation, labeling of plates and slides, dispensing media, performing serum sample and control/standards dilutions (and transfer as necessary).
  • Perform virus working dilution and dispensing; and after incubation, prepare cell solutions and dispensing followed by incubation.
  • After incubation, fix plates and slides, stain the wells, and perform microscopic reading per procedure to obtain values used for calculation of IU/mL and ED50 results.
  • Review results, enter into LIMS for reporting.
  • Crossing training and working in other diagnostic sections areas are expected.

Prepare and qualify reagents

  • Prepare reagents from component parts per procedure directions.
  • Prepare standards/controls, virus stock/cell bank, and conjugate from raw material, plan qualification procedures, perform qualification experiments, analyze results for acceptance criteria, document all steps, aliquot into single use or bulk quantities, store in appropriate storage.
  • Monitor reagents supplies, to plan for new lot preparation and qualification.

Perform routine quality assurance/quality control procedures

  • Perform reagent QC (trending and tracking) procedures, including maintaining a QC workbook for each assay.
  • Perform routine proficiency and competency procedures including preparation of panels for internal and external programs.
  • Participate in monthly QA meetings (OHL and VMDL).
  • SOP/IG/form review, and revision (as necessary).

Perform routine equipment quality assurance/quality control procedures

  • Perform daily/weekly/monthly/annual QC/QA tasks for equipment monitoring and maintenance.
  • Schedule external maintenance checks.
  • Replace CO2 tanks as necessary.
  • Clean incubators as per recommended schedule including replacement of water.
  • Qualify new or repaired equipment.
Shift

Full-time 40 hours. 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Occasional after-hours work is expected.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or other Advanced Degree
  • Previous experience in a laboratory setting
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range $21.50 - $23.35 per hour, salary commensurate with education and experience
