THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is actively looking to hire a Regional Traffic Management Center Operator for Allegheny County. This position is integral to the continuous operation of a 24/7 Regional Traffic Management Center, where the successful candidate will play a crucial role in monitoring and managing traffic flow, ensuring safety, and responding to incidents in real-time. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will play a crucial role in the operation of the Western Regional Traffic Management Center, overseeing its Advanced Traffic Management Software System (ATMS) to effectively manage traffic flow on the designated Interstate and Expressways. Your responsibilities will include the direct operation of a network of Closed Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) and traffic detection sensors, which are essential for identifying and assessing both recurring and non-recurring traffic incidents that could disrupt the flow of vehicles on the Regional Freeway System. Additionally, you will utilize these CCTV systems along with automated centralized High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) controls, detection mechanisms, and signage to monitor and manage the daily operations of the I-279/I-579 HOV Lane, ensuring its timely opening and closing. Furthermore, you will be tasked with collecting and disseminating real-time traffic condition updates to the motoring public, utilizing Variable Message Signs and broadcasting recorded messages via the Highway Advisory Radio System to keep drivers informed. Coordination with the Pennsylvania State Police will also be a key aspect of your role, as you will assist in dispatching Freeway Service Patrol Vehicles to address incident-related issues during their operational hours, thereby enhancing overall traffic safety and efficiency.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work schedule varies to cover this 24-hour Traffic Management Center, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 1 day per week upon completion of one year on the job. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Bridgeville.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year of experience evaluating and coordinating information related to traffic data, incidents or conditions.
