THE POSITION

Start an accounting career with the Department of Corrections! The State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Camp Hill is seeking a highly motivated person to join our team as an Accountant 1. In this role, you will provide general oversight of the Inmate Accounting Section within our Institutional Business Office. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will be responsible for the general supervision of the Inmate Accounting Section which includes 3 Accounting Assistants who maintain the Inmate General Welfare Fund (IGWF). IGWF includes inmate monies received from families and earnings from the institution. By preparing financial statements and varied reports, you will control and account for IGWF funds. You can expect to maintain ledgers using automated accounting software to account for inmate accounts, revenue producing functions, and annual budget purchases. Additionally, you will investigate data discrepancies and make corrections or recommend changes.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
  • Work hours are 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 60 or 65.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $51,971.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Financial Programs Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Five years of Bookkeeping experience and fifteen college credits in accounting; or
  • One year as a Fiscal Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration), and fifteen college credits in accounting; or
  • Successful completion of the Commonwealth's Accounting Intern Program; or
  • A Bachelor's Degree including or supplemented by fifteen credits in accounting.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
