Organization Overview

The Production Division within Brookhaven National Laboratory's Facility & Operations Directorate provides mechanical, architectural, and civil services to build, support and maintain the Lab's infrastructure.

Position Description

Production Division seeks an HVAC Technician to join their team. Under minimum supervision constructs, installs, repairs, maintains and operates refrigeration, air conditioning, ventilating and auxiliary and related equipment. Will perform the same work on air compressors and vacuum pumps whether or not associated with the above equipment. Shift workers assigned to Building 600 acknowledge all Laboratory alarms in the control room and make appropriate notifications.

This position reports to the General Mechanical Supervisor. The hours of operation/shift for this position are Monday to Friday 8am-4:30pm.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform Preventive Maintenance

  • Inspect belts, motors, coils and filters
  • Check refrigerant levels and pressures
  • Lubricate moving parts
  • Clean or replace air filters and condenser coils

Diagnose and Repair System Issues

  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, or refrigerant-related faults
  • Use multimeters, gauges, and diagnostic software
  • Replace faulty components (e.g., contractors, capacitors, sensors)

Monitor System Performance

  • Check air flow, temperature splits, and system efficiency
  • Log system pressures, amperage, and voltages
  • Ensure systems are operating within manufacturer specs

Communicate with Facility Staff and Supervisors

  • Report on system status and completed work
  • Explain any identified issues and recommend repairs
  • Coordinate scheduling and access for service

Ensure Safety and Compliance

  • Follow OSHA and EPA regulations (e.g., refrigerant handling)
  • Lockout/tagout procedures during repairs
  • Maintain proper PPE and safety awareness at job sites

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Minimum 6 years' total experience, comprised of 4 years' apprenticeship, plus 2 years' experience or 6-8 years total experience comprised of formal trade school, plus minimum 2 years' experience, or 8 years' experience (no formal training).
* Solid background working on absorption, reciprocating and centrifugal equipment.
* Possess EPA Universal Certification.
* Ability to demonstrate brazing techniques.
* Familiarity with reading blueprints and HVAC wiring schematics.
* An understanding of building management systems controls.
* Knowledge of cooling tower maintenance.

  • Possess a valid NYS driver's license.
  • Must have a telephone and provide the number to BNL for callout and contact purposes.
  • Possess good written and verbal communication skills, including:
    • Ability to follow written instruction procedures, work orders, and similar documents.
    • Ability to sufficiently write/complete work orders and other required documents.
    • Ability to communicate verbally with customers, fellow workers and supervisors
  • Be able to complete all the requirements of the Job Training Assessment.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Experience using a maintenance management system or CMMS program.

* Familiarity with Building Management Systems (BMS).

* Strong background with air compressors.

* Accustomed with HVAC proprietary software.

Environmental, Health, and Safety Requirements:

Must meet medical requirements of the position, including but not limited to..

* Standing, bending and lifting.
* Able to do heavy lifting > 30 lbs.
* Ability to work in confined spaces.
* Ability to climb fixed and portable ladders.
* Able to work indoors & outdoors in hot or cold environments.
*Able to work around moving machinery.
* Ability to use power and hand operated hand-tools.
* Able to operate fork trucks.
* Good physical coordination/dexterity and balance.
* Ability to wear proper PPE such as a respirator, safety glasses, safety shoe and hearing protection.

Other Information

  • The successful applicant will be required to join IBEW Local 2230 and maintain membership within 30 days of their start date.

The starting salary for this position is $44.23
