Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, one of the world's leading global law firms with offices in strategic hubs of commerce, law, and government across North America, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, is seeking to hire an Applications System Engineer reporting to the Manager of Application Services.

The Applications Engineer is responsible for supporting commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) legal software in a Microsoft enterprise environment. The ideal candidate will be both highly analytical and technical, with experience in evaluating, troubleshooting, and supporting various business process solutions, as well as providing recommendations for improvement.

This is not a development or DevOps role, but a great opportunity for a hands-on technical support and systems configuration role focused on installation, patching, issue resolution, and lifecycle maintenance of legal industry applications.

This position will be resident in our Philadelphia office with a hybrid working schedule.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Install, configure, and support commercial legal applications, including dependencies (IIS, SQL Server, permissions, and network connectivity).

  • Perform software patching, version upgrades, and license tracking across application lifecycles.

  • Troubleshoot issues at the infrastructure, configuration, or application level and serve as point of escalation for user-reported incidents.

  • Manage and maintain connections between applications, data warehouse platforms, and cloud systems via APIs and integration tools.

  • Create and maintain detailed documentation, including installation guides, configuration settings, troubleshooting steps, and support runbooks.

  • Support attorneys and legal professionals with issue resolution, training, and functional guidance on legal-specific tools.

  • Coordinate with vendors for patch delivery, issue troubleshooting, and application roadmap discussions.

  • Support Agile-based initiatives by contributing to application upgrades, testing, and deployment tasks.

  • Use ServiceNow and JIRA to manage support tickets, project tasks, and internal documentation workflows.

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university.

  • 4 - 6 years of experience supporting enterprise software in a Microsoft Windows environment.

  • Advanced understanding of how enterprise applications operate in Microsoft environments, including infrastructure dependencies, access controls, and upgrade/patching processes.

  • Hands-on experience with user focused support or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Software patching, issue resolution, supporting legal applications, lifecycle support.

  • Strong experience installing and configuring COTS applications, including:

    • IIS Web Services

    • SQL Server (basic database connectivity and maintenance)

    • Configuring Windows Server and Active Directory environments

  • Experience working with cloud-based or hybrid-hosted applications (Azure preferred).

  • Knowledge of system integration methods (API use, file-based transfer, basic scripting).

  • Familiarity with Agile project environments and tools such as JIRA, Confluence, and ServiceNow.

  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills, especially in user-facing environments.

  • Excellent documentation habits and attention to detail in a fast-paced legal setting.

Preferred but required:

  • 3+ years of experience with SQL and relational databases.

  • 3+ years supporting applications that utilize RESTful or SOAP web services.

  • Experience supporting legal industry software (e.g., Elite 3E, Intapp, Aderant, CPi, Westlaw, Equitrac, Bighand).

  • Experience resolving escalated technical issues and providing tier-2/3 support.

  • Familiarity with authentication systems (SSO, Active Directory, Azure AD).

  • Working knowledge of scripting or automation tools such as PowerShell (not required).

  • Strong documentation and process improvement skills.

  • Experience using tools such as Azure, ServiceNow, Jira, Confluence, and Microsoft 365 including Microsoft Windows Server OS, Microsoft Windows Desktop OS (Windows 11), Microsoft Azure.
