Duties and Responsibilities |
SUMMARY:
The Tax Manager is responsible for ensuring the University is in compliance with federal, state, and local tax laws. Manages all aspects of the preparation of the University's Form 990, 990-T, and certain other returns. The Tax Manager monitors tax law developments and communicates the effects of these developments to University management.
MINIMUM
EDUCATION/
EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, or related field from an accredited college or university and minimum five years of experience.
CPA,
MST and/or
MBA preferred.
DUTIES &
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Tax Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of the University's Form 990, 990-T, and certain other returns. This includes coordination and collection of data across multiple University departments to ensure timely and accurate filings.
Partners with the campus community on tax compliance matters related to University operations in the areas of nonresident alien taxation (
NRA), sales & use taxes, working condition fringe benefits, and Unrelated Business Income Tax matters.
Monitors federal, state, local and international tax law developments related to the campus community and develops necessary policies and procedures to ensure tax law compliance.
Identifies activities that potentially generate unrelated business taxable income by reviewing contracts and partnering with business managers and financial administrators throughout the University to review new revenue streams.
Advise campus community on rules/regulations surrounding fundraising and raffle activities and assists in analyzing and mitigating tax risk exposures in connection with University functions.
Responsible for non-resident alien and foreign vendor tax compliance.
Prepare 1042 and 1042-S Forms and prepares payments of withholding tax for payments made to non-resident aliens.
Coordinate preparation of Form 990-T work papers, state income tax returns, and applicable federal foreign filing forms.
In collaboration with the Investment office, reviews all K-1 partnership information from limited partnership investments in coordination with the accounting firm contracted to prepare the Form 990-T.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge through professional publications, seminars, and other training.
Liaises with external tax advisors concerning tax analysis of transactions contemplated by the University.
Provides support during the annual audit process, both external audits and internal audits as it relates to tax compliance and reporting. |
Minimum Education and/or Work Experience |
Bachelor's degree in accounting, taxation, or related field from an accredited college or university and minimum five years of experience.

Qualifications |
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of five years progressive experience in tax, accounting and financial analysis.
CPA,
MST and/or
MBA are preferred.
Tax or public accounting experience is required.
Must possess strong communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deal with various levels of management.
Must demonstrate initiative, self-direction, ownership of projects, ability to meet deadlines, attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and excellent organization, follow-through, and problem solving skills.
The individual should have strong project management experience and with the ability to complete a major audit, tax return or other financial project successfully.
The individual should have experience in financial or tax research interpretation, analysis and application, strong oral and written communication skills; and strong analytical, planning, coordination skills.
Ability to work in cooperation with other team members and constituents to achieve the University's goals and objectives.
Higher education or non-profit organization accounting and/or tax experience is desirable. |
